    Anti-virus software?

It's that time of year again and I need to get my anti virus. I couldn't think of a better place to ask than the collective minds of BBC
In the past I have had
-Macafee, nothing really wrong with it, but nothing special either. Slowed my computer down a lot.
-Kasperski, absolute crap, I couldn't do anything.
-Eset, cost more and I had to take my computer in three times for viruses that got through. not happy at all.
-Norton, it's what I am using now. I've never had a virus problem. I do however get a warning of high cpu usage randomly like reading the BBC. My computer will also ocasionally lock up and takes about 1/2 hour before I can do anything again. Is this the Norton?

I do not want "free" stuff that I can download off the interweb. I figure you get what you pay for and I don't want to screw anything up. What can you guys suggest? Should I get the higher end Norton that says it doesn't slow your computer down?
    Thanks

Don't be so quick to dismiss the free anti-virus programs. AVG is pretty good and I'm running microsoft security essentials and it's as good as anything I've ever used.

The Problem I have had/seen is that all these "Free" versions don't always stop everything.

then you have to download 3-4 more other things to have jsut as much protection as buying an actualy Anti-virus/malware/adware protection kit.

Example.......we run Norton on work PC's but it doesn't do squat as far as stopping anything unless it a MAJOR bug. So we have ot run Malwarebytes, super anti spyware, webroot and AVG to back it up. it really bogs you down sometimes runnig multiple applications.

I don't think you're going to find anything that is 100% fool proof. JMHO but I've seen the high end programs get caught too.

I also have switched 4 of my computers over to run Microsoft Security Essentials for about 4 months now, it does everything that McAfee's did for my and saved me some bucks since it's free. It does auto updates and you can schedule when you want it to do a back-up and tell it how much computer resources you want it to use when it does a scan.

    Re: Anti-virus software? (Puma Jim)

AVG has a pay version that, if they didn't have a free, i would get because it has worked so good for me over the last few years. I also run AdAware SE, they have a pay version too, but i have not seen a need to get eithers paid version because the free do their job and do it well. no issues in the 2 years i have had this machine.

I like AVAST better than AVG. I had a problem with AVG letting things get by, not with AVAST free. I use HITMAN PRO for rootkits and MALWAREBYTES for malware.
and run CCCLEANER after each web session.

had AVG slowed down the computer, so I removed it.

IMO if you are smart about where you go, and what you click on, you don't need it. Basic Firewall works fine.
