    Why does this happen?

Why are my unpainted tungsten weights doing this? This is really aggravating, I have them in a small plano box by themselves but am in the process of putting all my terminal tackle in one Falcon FTO 501 box. I don't want to put these in there bc I am worried that this will affect all my hooks and make them rust. How can I stop this from happening besides buying new weights (which I plan on doing but want to keep using these).

Sorry if this doesn't go here!

I'm no metalurgist But I don't know if the corrosion on tungsten would be the same as the rust of steel. I would think what ever is happening to the tungsten wouldn't affect the hooks. But like I said. I'm not an expert.

were the weights in contact with any other different metals in your box?

They were not in contact with anything other than other Tungsten weights, but the other weights are painted. These are the BassPro XPS weights, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Put a small zinc anode in with them...or just paint them with a couple of coats of black.

    Re: (goober)

if they havent been in the water, it could be simply be oxidation, lead weights will turn white if left to the air for a long time....

Cheif - I have my fluid bed being shipped to me from home, once I get it I will paint them. I don't know why I didn't think of that.

ol man - they haven't been used in a while and that is probably what it is.

    Thanks guys.

get you some of those ant oxidation tabs and put it in with all your terminal tackle should resolve it.

    Re: (goober)

Any lead I've ever had for any length of time gets a powder coating on them. I think it's them drying out on the out side.

Wash em and let em dry ... put em back and do it again in a year.

OR ..... Dont worry about it.

I have some that are doing that and some that are not. I just wonder if some might be a lower grade of material.

Have a good one and thank God for it!

I did a google search about tungsten, according to what I found, low grade tungsten (containing cobalt) will tarnish/corrode. Higher quality (containing nickel) will not.

    Interesting. Thanks for posting Bill.
I don't have any problems like this with any of my Tungsten weights but I don't have any BPS weights.

Don't know if it will help with the tungston but I put a chunk of sidewalk chalk (don't tell my daughter) in my weight box and my hook box. After I load the boxes, I always give the contents a little shot of WD40 as well. Never had a hook rust yet and I have some pretty old weights that still look new.

I put the sm packets of sillica sand in the hook and weight box's. Keeps the moisture damage down.

Re: Why does this happen? (bassinbrad)

I put some of the small silica packs found in retail boxes in my hook and crankbait boxes to keep the moisture out, not sure but maybe this would apply to tungsten also.
