    OMC Seadrive - no spark

    I have a 1990 OMC Seadrive 225 that has no spark. Model - 30APLDGH, Serial - G02285803.

When I first tried to start it this season I was getting a little fire and had it started for a minute or two but couldn't keep it running. I was thinking bad fuel but I have twin engines and I had no problem with the other engine. I ran most of the gas out of the tank on the other engine and added fresh gas and changed the water/fuel seperator. Both engines use the same seperator.

When I checked for spark at the plugs I had one plug not firing on the port side (top plug) and the middle plug was not firing on the starboard side. I moved wires and plugs around to rule them out (I now have new wires and new plugs installed). After messing with it for a while I had no spark in any port plug but all starboard plugs were firing. I switched the leads on the stator/charging coils and the problem stayed on the port side so I figured it was the powerpack. Bought a new powerpack and installed it. Now I have no spark at any plug. I did remove the stator thinking that was the problem until I found a troubleshooting guide that recommended switching the leads to see if it was the stator or the powerpack.

Any suggestions? Is there a way to test the powerpack and stator?

    Thanks,
    Paul

First check all the ground wires, especially the one on the pack. By now the battery is getting low, charge it and retest the spark. Make sure all the plugs are plugged in all the way!

Thanks rudetech1. Are you talking about the two ground wires that attach to the stud at the top of the pack? I am plugged into shorepower and have a battery charger running. I do think my battery has issues and may need to be replaced. Would that cause the problem even though it turns over pretty strong?

    Thanks again,
    Paul

I have another question. My model number is 30APLDGH. Every chart I see only has 7 digits for the model number. My has an extra digit (H). Is it truly a 1990?

A weak battery can have low voltage effects, even though the engine sounds like it is spinning over fine, it may be low on crank rpm.You might try removing the spark plugs and turning the engine over. You will need to ground the spark plug wires to prevent ignition of the fuel that may exit the engine. To check overall spark, you should be using the "sparky" anyway. Take care when doing this so you do not have a flame thrower situation. Eliminate the key switch from the system by disconnecting the black and yellow wire at the pack, also eliminate the shift assist switch by disconnecting the black and yellow wire comming from it leading to the pack. This will take those areas out of the loop and leave only the ignition system to worry about. Your model # is correct, the extra letter is a code of manufacture.
