Johnson 225 H.O. not running correctly

I have a 2000 Johnson 225 H.O. that does not seem to be running properly. It runs fine in the mid rpm range, but it seems like it's missing boh the low end an the high end of the powerband. I'll try to list symptoms as best I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd rather not take it in to the dealer if there is the possibility that it could just be something simple.

    - It is hard to start the first time off the ramp, after that it starts on the first bump of the key the rest of the day.

    - It has a somewhat rough, and possibly slow idle. It idles at around 500 rpm. It also dies occasionally when putting it in gear.

    - The rpm range from idle to 2,500 seems to be non-existant. When taking off the motor "bogs" slightly then jumps straight to 2,500 rpm, which makes loading a bit tricky!

    - It will not turn past 4,500 rpm, period. Once it get up to 4,500 it runs fine, it just won't turn any higher rpm.

    Thanks!

    Model # J225HGLSSC

    Serial # G04817063

I changed the fuel filter and the plugs last night and while doing so noticed that one of the carbs, the bottom left if looking at the front of the motor, is slightly out of sync with the other five. It does not begin to open until the others are approx. 15-20% open and never completely opens. The throttle blade on that carb is also completely closed at zero throttle. The other carbs are very slightly open, maybe .010. I'm guessing that this is at least part of my problem.

We have the same motor... I just posted about a hesitation slow idle issue with mine. Same starts hard, then starts fine after it is warm.

I have good top end though 5600 rpm... not quite the same low end issues but it has been very sluggish and even stalls when you go to first get on it.

Do you notice a large amount of oil/gas in your cowling under the air box??

My motor was purchased new in 2004, only has 154 hours on it. Very frustrating.

No, mine's pretty clean. No more gas/oil in the cowling than I would think to be normal.

The carbs being out of Sync like you described will cause it.... If you loosen up the allen screws on the shft bove the carb, let the plate seat and then retighten, then check and see if it operates like the others......

Like WD says they are out of sync. Before you make any adjustments though loosen the roller at the cam follower so you don't have and restriction of movement on the plates. CM

Thanks guys. I have them all in sync now. Hopefully that will solve my problem.
