    sure could use some help

I took the boat out today and it wouldn't start... I could really use some input if anyone has any suggestions or experienced a similar issue... I have a 1995 Johnson 50 HP 2 cyl 2 stroke... Took it out today and turned the key over and nothing ... it wouldn't turn over or even click... the key will actually click the choke but nothing else... I wiggled the handle but it never worked....

... I can get it to turn over by jumping the two large solenoid bolts... I go to the key switch and disconnect the yellow/red (i think thats start) and bump it to the red (i think is power) and it starts also... Does that mean for sure its a bad key switch? I just bought it brand new in March... OEM evinrude from Boats.net not sure if they have a warranty on electronics... thanks

Possibly a weak battery. Similar issue on my tracker this spring. Had the battery charging and it wouldn't hold a charge. Didn't have the power to turn the starter. Fresh battery fixed that.

battery brand new...I can crank the motor over perfectly by jumping the wires...Also tested battery with a battery tester and it read fine... trim and tilt works fine, other electronics work fine...Don't think it's the battery...

Or a bad neutral safety switch in the control box.

thats what worried me... I ordered a cheapo switch just to rule it out... If it's not it I guess I'll have a spare switch... How do you test the neutral safety switch?...Its a top mount control unit...I wasn't sure if that switch was in the controls or back at the motor but I am sure it wouldn't crank unless the lever was in the middle... thanks in advance for any input...

It is inside the control box. Try pulling back or pushing forward slightly on the handle while turning the key.

I was wrong.... Bypassing it doesn't work...at least twisting the wires together doesn't work... Before it wouldn't crank at all... I disconnect the neutral safety switch and it will crank but won't run.. I connect it back and I can start and ruin with 2 screwdrivers at the solenoid... Really could use some help... I don't want to buy another part until I'm sure what's wrong....

i'm still thinking neutral safety switch though... just not sure how to test it... I put the two wires together and the motor cranked ... just wouldn't run... ignition switched worked fine as far as cranking goes...I don't know... real confused....
