    How many hrs before rebuild?

I know this is a very subjective question, but was looking for some opinions.... How long do most motors go before they need major maintiance or a rebuild? I am looking at a 2002 boat with 400hr. It seems like a lot of hrs to me.

I've heard stories of well maintained Evinrude DI's that went 1200 hours and more. If it were missused, you may be rolling the dice or buying someone elses problems. The best suggestion is to pony up the cash and have a mechanic who knows Evinrude DI's survey the engine.

My old Ficht, while currently having it's issues, is otherwise running strong at nearly 500 hours.

400 hours divided by 4 years old comes out to be 100 hours per year. Not bad!

the secret to engine longevity is proper maintenance.

Re: How many hrs before rebuild? (mclayton52)

Is there any way you can purchace a warranty for it?

To me 400 hours is too many, if you do the math that is a lot of time on the water in 4 years. It breaks down to about 8 1/2 hours per month that the motor was actually running, think about it, how many hours do you actually run your motor on a typical fishing trip. Not alot unless you have long runs to make.

I only put a couple of hours on my motor each trip and a lot of that is cruising around with the family and not fishing at all. To me 8 1/2 hours per month is a lot of running. At 50 mph and 2 hours per trip that makes 100 miles.

I know alot of time is idle time on the motor and some hour meters start timing as soon as the key is turned on even when the motor is NOT RUNNING. My old airplane hour meter did that. I hated it because all maintance was based off of it. I learned never to turn the key until I was ready to start the motor.

Re: How many hrs before rebuild? (Neveredge)

When I'm out fishin, my motors running around 80%. Sometimes, the motors running from the time I start it till it's off the water because I'm trolling. The fact is, I'm trolling most of the time.

While growing up, most all the boats I was on ran pretty much non stop from the time it was started until we were finished, and it didn't make any difference if we were out fishin or just out water skiing.

Everyone uses their boat differently but most of us bass nuts fish more than we run our big motors. You don't keep the big one running while your casting the bank.

We do ski occasionally so of course we're running the big one. The kids love to tube but I'll bet its not real good for my motor though. Especially when my 250 lbs. brother wants a turn.

Shawn, Like you I wonder about using the bass rig for riding numerous people, and tubing. I did the family thing with the grandsons,(3) of em, and their mom and dad. Just seems like the wrong?. thing for a bass boat besides seating issues.

Re: How many hrs before rebuild? (Bassmeister)

That is kind of a loaded question, different motors require different maintenance. the commercial guys run them a gazillion hours before a rebuild and they know it is coming, but they don't beat the snot out of their motors either, that is there livelyhood.
Now the "normal rec boater" runs his 40-80 and maybe 100 hours/year and not always WFO. Normal once a year maintenance is fine.
Bass boaters are WFO all the time unless they are looking for a brush pile or hump (idle speed), fish and then off we go again WFO. You should have gotten a owners manual when you made the purchase that specifies the service intervals to your dealer, wether you adhere to the prescribed service plan is up to you.
Racers are a different breed and will rebuild a motor after 25,50, 100 hours, etc they just love to go fast.
So to answer your question if you have a crystal ball just before it blows up! Don't matter who makes it but the bottom line is follow the service schedule and they can last a lifetime without a rebuild.

CM, your right on the money.

Mike, I really like the water sports, this is why my wife really wants our next boat to be an Allison XB2003T. She loves the back seat in them. I can't get over how ugly they are. I don't care if they are really dang fast and can pull a tube all day long on a gallon of gas. I still want a new Bullet! WWWHHHHHAAAAAA.

I don't think a new one is in the cards this year anyway. I am having a tuff time with all the regs. $$$$ that go with a dump truck biz.

Anywhoo. If you really take good care of a motor it can last for a couple thousand hours. I know my 1979 Johnson 150 is still out there running and it has over 1500 hours on it.

Re: How many hrs before rebuild? (mclayton52)

I guess I'm different than most. I use a motor a lot (500-700 hours per year on average) and if I were buying a used one, I'd rather have one that was well used than one that was not. Also, the engine use profile should tell you a lot about how it was used. For example, I consistently put 60-70 percent of my hours on below 1000 rpm while slow trolling. Those are easy hours.

To me, 400 hours is just broken in good. And over a 4 year period, that doesn't amount to much use per year. Pretty much right on the recreational average actually. Have a qualified mechanic check it out and if he blesses it, go for it.

Re: How many hrs before rebuild? (Fletch)

we got 1400-1800 out of the rude DI, the old carbed motors(OMC) we got 1200-1300 and it was time for a rebuild. we are running Honda's now if they make it to 1200 it's a direct blessing from a higher power! i only have one boat left with a rude on it now i shouldn't have to tell y'all how they are run....think 18-20 years old with a 50+mph boat!!!lol but we keep to a very strict maintance schedule(my job)

almost forgot i'm the naval engineering dept head for a very busy Coast Guard Station

Re: How many hrs before rebuild? (cgfishn)

I used to be one of those 19 year old crazy boat drivers when I was an SRT team member in the Marine Corps. I got the job of drivin our skiff (50 hp Johnson) because I was the only one who knew anything about boats. (I owned a BassHawk with a Johnson 150 on it)

My SSGT went for a ride in my bass boat and after jumping a few wakes and running 60+ to the fishin hole he decided that I wasn't the guy who should be in charge of the skiff.
