Engine dies when driving up on Trailer & using excessive oil

    2003 model Johnson 150 S/N 0J4999326...

    It’s on a 03 Stratos 190 F/s. 14 1/4 X 21 p alu prop

Runs great, till it is idled around waiting for the truck, then when attempting to drive on the trailer it dies.... I am going to see if it is related to trim, or if it is due to the increased load of trying to power load on the trailer.....

Sometimes it can be cured by touching the choke and "richining" up the engine. Could be a pilot jet problem? But you guys are the outboard experts!

    Welcome to the BBC.

I would have you tech look at the sync and link....I bet he will find that the timing roller is not touching the EET arm.

Have him check the cylinder head temps too.

Remove the motor cover (motor off of course) remove the round black cover on top by removing the three screws holding it down.

Standing behind the motor looking down at the top you will see a arm with a roller on the end coming from the right towards the center of the motor, that roller MUST be touching the crescent shaped arm in front of it.

If it is not, loosen the first phillips head screw you come to (starting at the roller) on that arm and slide the arm up until the roller touches, tighten the screw, reinstall round cover.

    Does this make since?

    Hey Gents,

Got the adjustment made from your instructions.... Still having the same problem. Runs awesome until I go to load on the trailer.

I put a different prop on as well. I picked up a 4 blade SS 13.75 x 22p prop, similar to the shooter props. Its a MW replacement P/N 01306. It actually seemed to be worse with this prop on the trailer. It is an over and through exhaust setup with this prop.

This prop also seems to slip or something, engine will pick up RPM for no apparent reason every now and then. Picked up almost 5mph, but lost lost on the hole shot as well.

Also running XD 100 oil, I know it is overkill on this engine, but I thought it would de carb the engine.

    Any suggestions would be great.

Does it make any difference if you trim in/out.?Are you trimming up a lot to get on the trailer?Need to also check the primer solenoid for leakage. Check it by priming the bulb nice and solid, turn the engine over to start, prime, watch for fuel to leak out around the red lever. If fuel leaks out, air gets in, the air goes to the top carbs and causes a stall unless the primer is hit, which richens up the circut. You will normally see excess fuel around the primer area if it is leaking.

Re: Engine dies when driving up on Trailer & using excessive oil (rudetech1)

Trim does not seem to affect the condition... I do see some oil residue is dripping from the carb area, and I have to clean it up every other time I go out. Also when I pull the air intake off there is oil sitting in the throat of all the carbs.

I will check for fuel leaks tonight. I think this is more than likely the prob. The first few times I took the boat out it power loaded fine.

Hey Rude tech, What is the function of the "Red" Maintenance valve on the primer solenoid you were refering too?

It was partially open, and I believe it could be the source of my problems... Have you ever experiance this ?

I have not been able to test the boat after discoving this

    Thanks

The red lever onthe primer pump is to manually prime the motor. The normmal position is parallel to the pump. If you move it from one extreme to the other, you should feel it click into the detente position as it gets parallel to the pump body. My '94 200 would only run with the level in the manual prime position. Turned out the OMS was bad and had to be replaced,

Re: Engine dies when driving up on Trailer & using excessive oil (1993392)

I read some past posts, and determined that it could be the anti siphon valve...

Took out the rear seat platform and removed the valve... went to the local shop and purchased a new one... installed.

This defiantly fixed the excessive oil use prob, but I still have to touch the choke a couple of times to get it to load on the trailer.

Should I richen up the idle mixture?
