    SHO 250

A buddy of mine got a call 2day after he dropped his boat off last week the dealership they told him he had blown his SHO for the second time . Yes, i said for the second time ,how do you blow a new motor up twice ( 2011 model ). Just asking not trying to or anything.

Did his engine have a problem with rising oil level? Not trying to , just asking a reasonable question for a 2011 model.

    Re: SHO 250 (Charlie206)

I hope this making oil issue has been fixed on 2012 models, I got a boat on order with a 250 SHO.

Ive also read some of the posts here about keeping the bow down while in break-in period to ensure the motor stays loaded up enough to seat the rings.

Re: SHO 250 (WATER DOG 2)

This kind of post with no data or details does no good for anyone...

    It's all hearsay and useless!

No one is but that's exactly what is happening with third hand information and no details...

I have a SHO and have seen and heard it all and yet my rig is doing great!

What's it to you if you don't own an SHO?

You still haven't answered my question about the name and location of your buddies dealer?

    Re: (Meleagris1)

Whats your deal man just a simple question . I've spent i know 98% of the hrs that is on that boat since he has had it and was wandering . Im in the process of putting together/ordering a new boat within the next few weeks and was thinking about the 250 SHO but i guess since im getting nowhere here i can always go with a 250 Pro XS Merc and spend the extra $$ in fuel . But thanks for your help though.

    Re: (WATER DOG 2)

I for one am curious as to the cause of the failure and the outcome of the repairs . Being a new SHO owner i want all the heads up i can get . When folks come on the motor forums and post failures when only 2nd or 3rd hand info it doesnt help any of us prevent it on our on motors when there arent any details

My deal is this . . . you've asked a "simple" question that no one could possibly answer without more information. I was willing to do the leg work for you. If you give me the name and location of your buddies dealer and I will call them and get you the information you are looking for. If you won't provide the information necessary to answer YOUR question, then you are just .

"i can always go with a 250 Pro XS Merc and spend the extra $$ in fuel ."...

You got to be kidding with this comment....$25 to $30 per tank of oil and you think you will save money over the price difference of a SHO...(which is not that much by the way....)

Go with the technology you like as your economic comparison does not compute! The PRO XS is a great engine and the SHO is different but also great! I have a 250 SHO and would buy nothing else for many reasons. The salt water outboard guys are almost completely 4 stroke (both Verado and Yamaha).

The "i have a buddy" posts are always suspicious.....and can look like !

Re: SHO 250 (WATER DOG 2)

There is a known issue with the upper crank bearing. It is allowing the crank to move and cause wear issues. The first series of serial numbers made are the motors with problems.

    Re: SHO 250 (Cowboy)

Not true on the oil. I've also been told it was a crank issue and the newer powerheads were shimmed on the crank and the problem is fixed. Supposedly on engines after April, 2011 but that is rumor. Yamaha will not admit to the problem, I know that for a fact, so it's been very difficult to get specific, correct information. The dealers know but don't want to talk about it.

I saw a guy getting towed in during a tournament a couple weeks ago in a new I model Skeeter with a SHO. 3 days later I was at my Skeeter dealer when he rolled up and when the service manager said hows it going guys, he said "not good, my new motor blew up this weekend" I was thinking about saying hey, I saw you getting towed in but the guy didnt look like he was in a joking mood. I felt for the guy, its a beautiful boat that looked like it was brand new. He had a 250 SHO on the back, but I dont know what year.
