Floored my boat only does 7.2 mph! Help

My skeeter is a 93 200sx, 200hp ProV Yamahammer, that I just purchased last month and have only had it in the water twice. According to the previous owner the motor and carbs were rebuilt and gone through this past winter. The first time I had it in the water it ran out great; very smooth and very fast! Well, this past week was spent wet sanding and buffing and it turned out great! Almost looks like a brand new boat.

Well, yesterday, I put her in the water and as soon as I passed the no wake zone I hammered down on it…………….only for the front end to come up and it top out at a blistering 7.2 mph lol! I had the hot foot to the ground and it never cleared up and took off. The motor sounded as though it was running good (i.e. not missing) it just wouldn’t rev up and take off. From the few times I had it crunk up before you just choke it once till the motor dies, then it would fire right up, and run/idle forever with no issues. Yesterday I noticed that it wasn’t idling as smooth and it actually cut off a few times Heck it died one time yesterday, right before the bottom fell out of the sky, and wouldn’t start for like 30 minutes. It would just spin over and not even try. Then as soon as the rain stopped, I turned it over and hit the choke button one time and it fired right up. I had to keep patting the gas to keep it running

The weird thing is, when I put it in reverse it was fine. The motor revved up like it was supposed to and it made power like it was supposed to. The only diagnostic work that I had time for last night was pulling the plugs. The threads on all 6 plugs seem to be wet with fuel. So could the needle and seat be stuck in the bowls, causing it to flood the motor?

I’m fairly new to the boat game, and have absolutely no experience with 2 stroke motors, so any help/ direction would be very much appreciated!

    Thank you in advance!

Well, with a used rig you have to start with all of the basics starting with the fuel system. Check all fuel lines, bulb, and connections. Ensure that they are all ethanol compliant. Next will be filters, water separators etc....

    That will get you started!

Update: I checked for spark and changed the plugs with no luck. I did notice that when it was idling if it started to act like it was going to cut off I'd squeeze the fuel bulb and it would idle up and sound fine. What could cause this?

Also, I've done some reading on the power head. basically wtf is a power head and how to you diagnosis the power head? From the little bit that I read the symptoms that I'm having are pretty much dead on for a bad power head.

    thanks

You are going too far too fast...inspect the obvious first. Fuel lines, filters, bulb, etc. etc. are common causes of trouble.

what am I looking for? I already inspected the fuel lines and bulb for holes or cracks. Didn't see any visual holes

    Re: (eadfishing)

If the fuel lines are old, they may not be ethanol compliant. These hoses have been known to deteriorate internally and collapse under fuel draw. Also they can put little pieces of crud from the deteriorating internal material.

The little check valve in the bulb can create intermittent problems as well.

Another method is to hook up a portable fuel tank to the engine and test (ensure your lubrication when you do this. Some require premixing the fuel with oil, others do not). If the problem goes away, you know you have a problem up stream of the engine which would include tank problems, fuel lines, water separating filters, fuel bulb, etc..etc..

    Good Luck

    P.S.

If all is well with the fuel supply system I would be suspicious of the "rebuilt Carbs" next...

If that's the case, it sounds like fuel pumps going bad to me.... I don't know how many are on your motor but they are very cheap to replace.. 30ish bucks a piece, plus a dollar or so for each gasket.

Looks like you have two fuel pumps..

    http://www.boats.net/parts/sea....html

Part number 21 is the pump, and number 34 is the gasket.

That would be my next step if your fuel lines and bulb look good.

I dont think I spun the prop. I searched that and the symptoms are high and quick reving without going anywhere. Sort of like a slipping clutch in a car or truck. The rpm's, in my situation, aren't going above 2k.

I don't know of a way to check fuel pressure in a carb'd motor, but you can check the fuel pumps by un-bolting them from the motor and pumping your fuel bulb, one at a time. They pumps are little diaphragm pumps that run off the pulses of the engine. If one of the diaphragms is bad gas will leak through backside of the pump when you squeeze the bulb.

Update: Yesterday I took the fuel line off of the port side tank and ran it into a gas can that had 93 and sea foam in it. Within a few minutes it began to idle much better. I poured the rest of the mix into each tank. Then I took it to a local lake to test it out. At first there was no improvement. After holding the throttle down for a minute or so it came up on plane and took off……..which it didn’t even come close to doing last weekend. It continued to improve until the hotfoot came loose from the floor lol. So I loaded it up pretty happy with the results.

So I’m guess I have some bad fuel that I need to replace with some good fuel.
