not happy with my 91 yamaha 225 hp

i picked up my first ranger after owning two tritons. i put it in the water and the engine wont start. . then took it back to to the dealer i bought it from they fixed the ball and changed the spark plugs it started there and ran. so i decided to take it out the next day and again it wouldnt start. called them up and they think its the fuel pump and the switch between the seats to change tanks. since the switch needs to be off and at acceseroty for the engine to get gas. when it does start it seems like its running out of gas. if it stays running in idle once you put it in gear shuts right off. need help ive been waiting two weeks for parts to get to the dealer. is there any thing else that this could be.

Did you lake test the boat before buying it or is this the first time you tried to run the boat? That is a great engine and the Yamaha engines from the 90’s are as close to bullet proof as you can get. Could be many things but I would definitely make sure all fuel lines from the tank to the engine are new and also put a 10 micron before the bulb and tank. The only filter on that vintage motor is a screen/bowl. Hope you figure it out soon.

Would the dealer's mech be willing to meet you at the boat launch to try and start your motor? If so, have him bring a portable tank of mixed gas, disconnect your fuel line from the gas tank(s), hook up the portable and run the engine. If it starts and runs, including planes out, etc., you have just isolated your problem to the fuel lines. Remember: ethanol is playing havoc with our fuel lines. I become very leary of shops that start replacing parts without proof positive that the replacements will solve the problem.

This doesn't make sense.....My 1990 Ranger has port and stbd tanks, and I have to select that on the switch to get gas from those tanks to the motor. If I select OFF or ACCESSORY it will run out of gas and suck the primer bulb flat.

What did your dealer say when you asked him to go to the lake with you bringing with him a five gallon can of pre-mixed gas to run in your engine? Is there any evidence that the fuel lines from each of the fuel tanks to the "switch" have been replaced? Are they new? I ask this because the engine runs when it shouldn't be getting any fuel, and this leads me to believe the fuel lines were reinstalled incorrectly. A first year mech should be able to figure that one out. Please keep us posted on your progress.

well they replaced the fuel pump and a fuel line yesterday put it in the water and it started and idled better but when put in gear just shutsoff. it reaches 1000 rpms and turns off. im ready to get my money back. where meeting at a lake so they can see what its doing, since they cant replicate it at the shop it starts there and runs but not in the lake.

How old is the fuel? Have they tried to run it on a shop tank and eliminate the fuel system in the boat? Do you have fuel/water separator installed? Are your fuel lines E-10 compliant? Sounds like you have fuel issue.

Heres an update. they are giving me a new prop and a new steering system. i dont know how is this related to it not getting on plane since it shuts off at 1000 rpms.

Maybe they can't figure that part out, so they're gonna try to get you hooked with other goodies. I hope you don't fall for it and will only be happy when it runs perfectly.

Please don't name the dealership, but can you tell us what brand of outboard or outboards they normally sell? Do you know if their mechanics are certified Yamaha mechs? At any rate they appear to be jerking you around. The legal principle of "Buyer Beware" probably applies here, but I believe it is about time you visited an attorney for some advice on what your options are. For gosh sakes if you manage to get out from under this deal, don't buy another product from this dealership.

+1 John! If this were me, I'd have to start asking myself if this is the dealership I want to work on my outboard.

Sounds a lot like the runaround one of our locals got with his Yamaha last year. Blah blah blah.....I think we figured it out this time.....another $1000.....this will fix it for sure this time.....ohhh....we forgot that....just $800 more.....well, we didn't think that could cause it......just another $1200.....
