    new guy prop question?

This is my first boat and I don't know alot, although I have learned alot on this forum. Here is my question, I have an 1979 johnson 85hp v-4 ( crossflow?), the prop is ding/chiped and I would like to get a new one but how do I know what size/type of prop I need?
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Welcome to the BBC Sarge.

Look at the nut that holds the prop on, if its a OMC prop the size will be there, IE: 13/14x17.

    Welcome Sarge!
Hope you weren't my S-I-L's DI ! Look on the hub of your prop there should be a number stamped on it just below the prop nut. I'm gonna guess it's about a 17" pitch aluminum, you can get it re-done or get a new one. You should have a prop shop in your area that can rework it for you and save some $$ over new. Try your local dealer too usuall turn around time is about a week. CM

Thanks for the info guys! I will have to try to go by the storage lot tomorrow and check it out. Its bad enough that as a drill sgt I don't get much time off but since i live on post I can't keep the boat at the house. If I want to go fishing I spend half my time picking up or dropping off the boat and loading/ unloading batteries and gear

OK, I checked my prop, but no numbers. I checked the boat next to mine and the #s were right were ya'll said they should be. Is it possible mine might be under my prop nut? By the way the dealer in my area said the won't touch my boat because it's to old.

    Sarge
you could have an aftermarket prop, it should be some where on the prop. Pi$$ poor dealer in your area then. You need to transfer to FT. Campbell or Ft.Jackson Rusty or I could fix you right up . There should be plenty of prop shops in that area, just look in the book and give them a call, pull your prop and they can put it on a jig and tell you just what it is. CM

Re: new guy prop question? (ChampioNman)

Actually, I will be leaving Ft Sill in August and am seriously thinking about going to Ft Campbell. Heard there's good fishing around there, plus I promised the wife I would try to get some where near here home (IND) It has been kind of hard on her being 1200 to 1500 miles from home for 16 years. If I do I will definitely be look'n y'all up.

    Thanks again

Sarge, the numbers may be on the side of the prop (outer hub) or.........they may be under the back, you will have to remove the prop to check.
