    Spark plugs for FastStrikes

Just curious why different year 150 FastStrikes use different plugs. A few days ago someone asked about plugs for a 94', he was told to use QL78YC. I have a 96' my manual says QL82YC, my buddy has a 97' his manual says QL78YC. What is the difference between the 78's and 82's? Is my motor special or what?

Unfortunately we had a few misprints. The QL78YC is the plug to use, unless some one can catch me having a brain fart here. Do you have QL78YC in it now?

No, my manual says 82's. Should I have the 78's?

posted by Rusty when I asked this question last week.
QL82YC gapped at .030 as Seahorse would suggest...
    I would suggest QL77JC4......

    Better stick with Seahorse's suggestion.

Uh-Oh, now I'm in trouble. Just want to use whats right. Are the 82's to hot?

Re: Spark plugs for FastStrikes (t-bone)

The QL77JC4 is the all round' plug. The QL78YC fits from 91' to 06' 60 deg Lv engines. They are not necessarily too hot, depending on the condition of the water temp. A lot of it is TIP shape, the contour of the spark plug and it's effects on the burn. The .030 is the gap.The info you just got is from the p.a catalog on my desk. This is my bible from time to time.

Thanks, I'll use the 78's then. Glad I did'nt get new ones yet. And make a note in my manual for the future.

Re: Spark plugs for FastStrikes (t-bone)

Back around '94 or so, Champion Sparkplug was sold and the new owners got with manufacturer's to update sparkplug recommendations. The extended nose QL82YC was recommended for most looper engines. They then found out that overpropped, un-tuned 225's using stale or poor quality fuels had possible detonation problems with that plug. All other motor ran fine. To make things less complicated, the former OMC changed the recommendation to QL78YC plugs, gapped at .030", for all looper motors 40hp and above.

The QL82YC's work great for most engines used in extended slow speed or trolling operations.

In the earlier years owners manuals specified the QL77JC4 plugs until the QL82YC plugs, then the QL78YC plugs were recommended.

Some other time we'll have the history lesson of the .030", to .040", and back to .030" gap changes.

So the moral of the story is either plug will work without any performance issues. I don't troll or idle much thank you.

I'll miss class the rest of the week as I'm heading to Bull Shoals to get schooled on bass fishing in a lake with no weeds.

    Spark Plugs...Cotter Pins?????????

Well let me tell ya, I would use them QL77JC4s in any motor if they dont hit the piston when you crank it and for cotter pins just get ya some old nails, you can find them all over the place.

Gee, I love you guys !!!!!!!

    Rusty,

Do you prefer the galvanized roofing nails for corrosion prevention, or do you use ordinary box nails for cotter pins and that is how you got your nickname?
