    OK FLYSWATTER

As promised, I told you that I would provide you with the outcome of that SHO that was towed in on Kerr Lake. From what I have been told, the engine blew. The fellows' name is Scott Rothenberg and he works for Bliss-Murski Sales Co. He is from Waxhaw, N.C., but I do not have a phone number for him. Not trying to start anything here, just providing evidence that there are indeed failures in the market not related to the pros, but to the average consumer. He did not get to fish the Kerr event as the motor had to go to the shop. I am only posting this because I feel that it is important for everyones consideration when opting to make such an expensive investment such as the SHO. A lot of you guys are having great results with the SHO, but the other, darker side needs to be heard as well. The last point that I will make is that the Titanic was supposed to be unsinkable, and that's as far as I'll go with that. Now, as far as my credibility goes or anyone elses for that matter, don't be so suspicious of everyone. Weigh what's on the table and ask yourself , what if they are telling the truth! Hope your motor holds up well and please keep us posted on it's performance. Maybe you and the others on here that are having such good results are doing something or operating these motors differently than the others that are having them fail. I want to know both sides. Thanks

How about providing a contact number. I'd like to follow up so I can better understand the SHO issue. Do you have it?

So how many have failed? Are you suggesting a larger number are failing? Do you have that data?

I am talking the dealer. My dealer will want to follow up per this issue. If you have it that will be great. Thanks!

I'll try to get more information as I can, as I am interested too. All I know right now is what I have provided in the last post. My friend, Jason was on his way home from Kerr yesterday and had just finished fishing the BFL tx on Kerr. I asked if he had talked to Scott at the meeting and he said no, because Scott had to take his boat to the dealership because it had locked up. I'll have Jason do a little more investigation on this for the both of us. I'm pretty sure we can eventually get a phone number and possibly find out the dealership where the motor is being serviced. Be patient, it might take me a day or two, but I will respond as soon as I can.

No, I am not suggesting that a larger number are failing, only reporting the ones that I know are not hearsay, but absolutely valid. I have no data for any other incidents provided to me from any other sources. These two motors are, however, too high in percentage for me based on the number of SHO's in my area. I think I know of maybe two or three more around here. So, if out of the five that I know of, two have failed, I'll let you do the math. I really want this motor to succeed, but I won't buy one if, ( here goes, I'll have HPDI owners all over me!) they have a track record like the HPDI's do. I guess I'll just stick with my old OX66 for now as it seems to be one of the more reliable engines Yamaha ever produced!

Is that plural are their more you can validate?

Getting the Dealers phone numbers is pretty straight forward. All he'll needs is the dealership or service manager where it's being evaluated and repaired. My dealer has been selling SHO's for almost 1 1/2 years and got some of the very first SHO's since he's a Yamaha exclusive dealer and he's never had one issue yet. He's been a master mechanic on Yamaha's for close to 15 years. His dad for three decades on outboards in general. I think he had one 250 SHO that made some oil very early on but that was corrected with the TSB thermostat recall with no return issues and NEVER one on the water break down out of his dealership.

If your report is accurate my dealer will know exactly what's wrong with the motor once he contacts the dealership and mechanic. He'll need that very important contact information.

Wait a minute.. I have been duped. Something very smelly here. I have seen your other posts about SHO's on this thread. So now your math is saying 40% of SHO's have failed. I will no longer respond. I smell a troll per your comments. Someone else can bite at your way over generalizing 40% SHO failures.

That's just forty percent of the ones that I know about. Also, I do post on other boards about various subjects, but I do like this particular board because I own a Yamaha myself. Just because I own a Yamaha doesn't mean that I will jump off of a cliff for them. I think Yamaha has the best motor going now with the SHO. I have ridden in a boat powered by one and am absolutely convinced that the owner of said boat and myself would not have made it back to our weigh-in on time down in Alabama on Wheeler if it had not been for the SHO's incredible torque and throttle response, as we were having to battle 4-5 ft rollers in the river at the interstate bridge all the way to the park. Some didn't make it in time, and others broke down. So, with that said, I am a fan of this motor, just glad I'm not the test-bed. If this motor can prove itself to me, it is the one I really want. I keep my eyes wide open and don't shut myself off to the world. You fella's believe what you want and that'll be just fine with me. I, on the other hand, will continue to pay attention to what's going on with this motor, both good and bad. I like knowing what's going on before I make a move.

    Re: OK FLYSWATTER (bhjr.)

Give it a rest. The damn SHO is strong as hell and has a lower % failure rate than the HPDI per units thus far. That is an undisputed FACT. Just because the motor went to the dealer does not mean it was a failure. Lots of things send motors to the shop. Just ask one of your Merc buds if his coils put him in the shop. I am going to say this again. This motor IS NOT NEW TECHNOLOGY! Yamaha has been making 4 strokes since 2000. The lighter block and plasma sleeves are new but the motor is based off the proven F series line. I have had a set of F225s with over 1200 trouble free hours. This is not like the introduction of the DI motors.(Ficht,Opti Pops etc..) It is proven technology with enhancements.

If there were a large number of failures it would be all over the net. My dealer has been selling them since they came out and has not had one failure. Not one issue. You are just another second hand account. "My buddy's friend knows a guy who's friends cousins SHO...."

OK, for all of you who care to know, the pro whom I know blew his SHO for the second time this year. And, let me add that after this, I will not post any more info about these failures as some of you guys take it too much to heart. I think you made the right decision in getting the SHO's, because I believe Yamaha will eventually get these motors right and I want one pretty bad. I'm just not going to jump of the cliff like lemmings do, following the one in front of them to their death.Flyswatter, as soon as I get the dealer info, I will IM it to you, as I don't want to upset any more of you. I hope all of your SHO's hold up well, but if you do have problems, at least have the balls to let the rest of know so we can make an educated decision as to whether or not to buy one. Fair enough?

Ok everyone, let's all be cool. Not every engine is perfect. Let's gather the facts and all of the info needed to verify problems and go from there.

    Re: OK FLYSWATTER (BuzzB8)

There are two types of motors....ones that have blown and ones that are about to blow....

Yamaha seems to have gotten it right with this motor. There will ALWAYS be failures with any manufactured items. Every person I've talked to, pros and joes, absolutely love it.

We have sold this motor for over a year now and we just experienced our first blown powerhead yesterday. Let me know if any manufacturer ever makes an unbreakable engine, I want one.!! I have run the SHO for over a year now and have had no issues. Haven't bought any oil either!

I would also be interested to know what motor you suggest people purchase that will not have failures..?

I have a 2008 F-225 that I purchased new. The only thing I have done with this 4-stroke motor is change the oil and lower unit once per year. This has been the most dependable motor I have ever owned. I would not hesitate to purchase another Yamaha 4-stroke.

4-strokes are the future. People can fight it, but it's coming, and I'm embracing it!!
