    09 200hp series 2 issues

Had some pretty major issues out of this motor at the lake today. Was a real pain to start this morning then after 20 minutes of turning it over, waiting, and turning it over it finally started. Ran to the first spot and as I was coming off plane it died. I immediately tried to start it again and it and it wouldn't even turn over. I thought it was toast but I decided to wait a bit and try after letting it sit for a few. It then began to turnover but was again a struggle to start. I got it ideling but really rough and when I gave it gas it would only get up to about 6mph. If I gave it any considerable amount of gas while it was ideling in Neutral it died everytime. I've only had this thing out 2 times before today and it ran ok prior to this. The previous owner said he had zero issues out of the motor and everything checked out clean when I did the warranty transfer. The engine has less than 30 hrs. I really hope this is just a spark plug or fuel filter thing. When I got home this afternoon I took some pictures of the plugs and they looked really bad. I'm going to change them regardless but I'm worried there are more issues here. What do you guys think?

Anybody?? I'm going to take it to the dealer today if I can make it. Very dissapointed so far with this . Motor should be in really good shape considering it's not even a year old yet (bought new in 2010) and has less than 30hrs. That is a lot of black on those plugs for that low of hrs . Is it the yamalube that burns so dirty?

Perhaps water in your fuel? Have you replaced your fuel/water filter recently? Have dealer check TPS voltage to make sure it's within specs. Many people will tell you the Yamalube will foul plugs fairly easily and for that reason many people switch to a full synthetic like Amsoil or Pennzoil oil. Far less plug fouling and carbon build up. Has your fuel been treated with Seafoam or Stabil?

It was on empty in the morning and I put fresh gas in it before we hit the lake. I haven't changed any filters as I just got the boat last month. Would filters go bad this quickly? This is the first gas I have put in it and I added marine stabil as well as the ringfree. Can you use the full synthetic while under warranty?

You can use whatever oil you choose including full synthetic as long as it's TCW3 certified which almost all are. You'll notice if you read your owners manual it always states it "Recommends", as opposed to "Mandatory" regarding what oil to use. Of course they will always try to tell you to use their own oil. This is all due to the Magnuson Moss warranty act bill that was passed several years ago which prevents a manufacturer from voiding warranty claims if you do not use their products.

Too many things that could cause your issue, best to take it to the dealer since it's under warranty. These motors have a bunch of fuel filters including the water/fuel separator your boat should also have.

Are all the plugs look this bad or is it just this one? This looks like the oil pump is stuck wide open. Check the oil pump linkage and ensure is set to specs.

Yeah they all pretty much looked the same. I'm not sure where the oil adjustment linkage is on this motor. I looked through the manual and didn't see it there. I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow and I'll make sure they check it. Thanks guys for the input so far.

Yikes! It's under warranty but I still hope that is not the case. Since all of the plugs look this way I'm thinkning that it is burning way too much oil. Taking it to the dealer today so we'll see. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Man that blows. Hopefully it's a warranty situation.

That is my main worry now. I hope I'm not in the same place next year with another new powerhead because they didn't catch what failed. I wish they would change out the motor being so new but I didn't get anywhere when I asked Yamaha about it. Yamaha reps/techs are going to be looking it over I think so hopefully they get it figured out. I'll make sure to post when everything is done so everyone knows how they handle these issues.
