    2006 Yamaha hpdi

I am looking at a 2006 champion 188 elite with this engine. It's my first bass boat and know nothing about the engine, and finding nothing on google besides the new engine and the owners manual on it. I know the engine has less than 100 hours on it, the previous owner passed away this fall and was the only owner. I do not have the serial number for it. I was wondering about ease of maintenance, oil consumption and speed. It has a 25p highfive prop on it, and will be used on Lake Erie for the most part. Thanks for the replies, and sorry I cannot provide more information. Engine is 200hp as well.

Well the motor is ok but you will have to keep the filters changed which are plenty including the one in the boat. Oil consumption is high compared to other brands. It is about 25 to 1 ratio.

If this is your first rig I would suggest looking at something without the HPDI motor. If you have to pay someone to change all the filters and clean the all the screens it can get very expensive.

I appreciate it, it's on a 06 champ and less than 50hrs on the engine. Both are in pristine condition and is a steal according to nada. So looking elsewhere on a motor isn't in the picture but motor still has warantee on it. Dealer is covering everything thru the end of next year so I can try to learn it if possible.

Good luck and just remember that filters are not included in everything!

I just repowered my old rig with the same motor and had it out today it was great. Mine also has a warranty but only till end of May. After running it today I will be changing the plugs and fuel filters so I can start fresh for the season.

The motor is quiet smooth and fast

If it does not have a on board fuel filter PUT one on. It will save you a lot in the long run. I have a 2006 HPDI 250, it about the same as yours just more HP the weight is the same as yours. I have the on board filter from day one and have not had to change the filter on the motor yet. We run gas without the moon shine it and also from day one kept Seafoam in it. Changed the plugs once and didn't need it then just had 100 plus hours on them.

I think you will like the HPDI! I have a 04 188 with a 2.6L HPDI 200 and has been a great motor. It pushes a full load and 2 people @ 64 gps with a yamaha 25m. I wish it was the 3.3L but other than that no problems! Just learn about, and keep up with the maintenance and you'll be good to go.

I'm sure that high five will be good for big water, but my guess would be it would spin too many rpm's at wide open.

Be sure and post pics in the ChampioN forum when you can!
