    Stator/1998 Evinrude Intruder?

I have a black sheath over the wires on my stator and a gray sheath over the wires on my power pack. I was told that they both have to match. I recently had the power pack replaced but the stator is factory(that I know of). I am having problems with speed and checking out on the dyno. Is all this true? Thanks

If I remember right, the black sheathed wiring was for the '91 and early '92 60-degree engines. The orange wires for the power coil carried 80-100 volts. The later model gray sheathed stator and pack used a 50 volt power coil. That is why the pack and stator have to be "color coded".

That doesnt tell me much Seahorse, so is this a concern or do they need to match? I have the 60 degree block and its a 1998. I do believe there is black blue gray and maybe another color sheaths available.(different stators and power packs) Some one else said different brands will be different colors, then why color code them? It makes no since to me.

This makes perfect sense. Use a gray or black sheath. The blue is for early edition engines. If you go aftermarket, good luck!! If you run the wrong one, you can burn out a pack( quickly). If you go to the dealer with the model number, ask the parts guy for a pack for that year, and it has a black or grey sleeve on it, it'll work. Or you have the option to put on all the electronics from an older version, say 91'. Buy a powerpack w/ a blue sleeve, stator, and sensor, spend $900.00. But why would you want to do that? As far as some of the after market stuff goes, you'd have to take it up with them.( if they know there is a difference). The voltages were ramped up after 93' to allow engines to start quicker, run better, have reserve voltage, and improved reliability overall. Hope this helps.

No one is still answering my question. So will my black sheath stator work with my gray sheath powerpack? Yes or No? I was told that a black sheath stator will not work with a gray, blue, or 1 other color (I cant remeber) powerpack. They said to get a matching gray sheath stator before it will run right. Im not tring to be a smart a$$ but Im frustrated because Ive had this boat for 17 months and it hasnt ran its peak performance since Ive owned it.

It should work fine. What are the performance issues with the engine?

Do you know what part numbers you have on the pack and stator? If you can get them, I can match the numbers to be sure. Better to be safe than sorry. It was a while ago on this issue. Have you replaced the sensor, have you had it checked?

    Re: Stator/1998 Evinrude Intruder? (rudetech1)

When I bought the boat it was low on compression and had a 27pp 4 blade shooter on it, so the dealer rebuilt the engine. When I got it back and all broke in it would only turn 4800 rpms and run gps 48mph. I put a 23pp 4 blade shooter on it and brought the rpms up to 5200 but still ran 48mph gps.He went through and put new powerpack and eye, tried a new vro, carbs have been through twice. He said everything has been replaced but the stator basicly. A evinrude master tech looked at it and couldnt do anything with it either, besides telling me that on their dyno it produced 2200 psi and it calls for 3200-3250. He paid for all this work not me, the last time I took it to him it still ran the same so I just forgot about it and left him alone. Since then I noticed it had the wrong spark plugs in it and replaced them, it now turns 5500 rpms but only runs 53mph gps. Exact rangers with the same motor runs in the 60s. I have been told so many different things its sickning, this all over 2 dealerships and mastertechs.

First thing I would do is a sync and link, then have the wot timing shot.... with test wheel.... Little things can often be big differance....

To find out for sure, use a DVA adapter and test the power coil output per the service manual. IF the book calls for 50V and the output is 90V, then the stator will eventually damage the pack. If the stator meets the specs, then you may be OK.

I would try to get one of them to water test the rig. Sometimes even the littlest things can be found on the water, not on the dyno. As the Whitchdoctor said, the sinc and link is important, so is a crack in the timing wheel. The techs need to check each cylinder for a missfire. 1 cylinder firing at the wrong time blows it all to hell, power loss, even feels smooth sometimes which makes it hard to find.
