Was contemplating rigging motors myself can this be accomplished or is there set up involved that only dealer can do ? And would me doing it myself affect warranty ?

That is a somewhat difficult question to answer OM, if you just want to hang one and rig the cables yep you can do it. If you have the software and are E-tec certified you can do it. There is a lot to hang and get an E-tec ready for delivery to a customer and have BRP warranty it. If you have no affliation with a Dealership then I would say NO. It is a more complex motor then hanging a regular carbed looper or a DFI. I'm not E-tec certified and have close ties to 2 BRP dealers (I'm an independent) and would not attempt it.
o.K I know I could run cables, wiring harness. I just figured I could help speed up install while waiting for new motors to arrive by doing the easy stuff then when they do arrive it would go faster and obviosly save a little money too.You think the dealer will let me do it?
It states in a dealers contract that they can not sell a lose outboard in the box. Sure there are some price whore dealers out there that will but BRP is starting to put a end to this. I will not sell one in a box. We lose alot of sales due to it but thats the way it goes. What we do allow is for the customer to rig his boat with the new rigging then bring the boat into the shop so we can hang and hook up the engine. THats not a problem at all and will save you the rigging cost.
Not trying to be a Smart A$$ but what else is involved in rigging a motor other than hanging it on the transom? and running cables to the ctl box![]()
In your case Walt it's a couple of![]()
and some #@!%* words!!! Or maybe thats my case.

The E-TEC rigging manual is 128 pages long and describes the correct way to locate the motor on the transom, how to measure and correctly route the control cables, what wiring sizes and battery sizes are needed, how to bleed the oil system, how to set up the oil ratio if using XD-100, what electrical cables and guages to use and how to hook them up, etc.
It also goes into the type of steering sytems and what is needed for attaching.
Your can purchase these from a dealer if you are a dedicated do-it-yourselfer.

SEAHORSE,
Do you have a P/N for the E-Tec rigging manual? We're getting a couple new E-Tecs and our dealer has not rigged any V6 E-tecs, in other words nothing with a remote oil tank yet and I want to be sure that the oil procedure is done correctly.
Thanks,
Erich
I'm sure you're right, there are some dealers that follow that 128 page manual to the page, word, and letter. But I'm pretty sure my dealer's going to slap the motors right where the old motors went. They might use that 128 page manual, but it'll be as a shim or something to mount the motors.
Remember, this is the same dealer that can't figure out how to run the NMEA 2000 system...and I'm sure it's in that 128 page manual somewhere.
The E-TEC service manuals have a rigging section in them. I don't have the rigging manual part number handy, but if someone is interested in it, I have it as a 25 megabyte download in .pdf format. You will have to have broadband internet access and the capacity to hold 25 megabytes of info. Most ISP's only allow about 10-20 mb of data at once.
I would also recommend the Accessories Service Manual for your year control box and other items. On binnacle mounts and some side mounts there are different ways and incorrect ways of hooking up the cables ends and ferrules.
For those with carbureted and DI motors, there is a standard rigging manual available under part number 5006079 for about $15 or so.

Having helped (read - grunt, hand me this/that) my dealer hang my e-tec 225 a little over a year ago, I will give you my experience at what was required. It should be noted that this was a repower on a boat that he had previously rigged new. Because the old motor was a '95, a new wire harness was required for the system check tach. In addition, new shift/throttle cables were also ran (cheap insurance). Old motor was de-rigged/removed and new motor hung in 4 hours. Existing old oil tank was used, but, a new sending unit/pickup was installed - difference in signals going to the system check gauge I believe was the reason. Hookup of the fuel and oil lines is somewhat of a pain as they use some crimp clamps that require a special tool. Oil tank was drained and refilled with XD-100, bulb/line primed prior to hookup to the motor connection. Same with fuel - new filter and line primed prior to hookup (highly recommend a Racor with a see-thru bowl for inspection). New system check tack installed and all gauges hooked up to the new harness. Not too difficult - and up to this point that is what most people with any mechanical apptitude can perform. This is where it gets interesting -- the motor came with a tag on the oil line that the motor was programmed for XD-100. My dealer verified it within the EMM. Next is the pre-priming of the oil pump/lines using the computer/PDA to ensure that the system was fully primed prior to first startup.
There may have been some other stuffs, but, that is what I recall. Question is -- is it really worth that few hundred dollars not to have the dealer do it himself? Think when it comes warrenty(if there ever is any) or service requirements. He'll remember back. For me, it was a positive experience and yes, I did pay the full rigging charge.
On the other hand, if you lack confidence in you dealer, you may want to look elsewhere. The majority of the problems with these motors come from improper rigging. Make sure that you use the right size BRP fuel line, good filters for your fuel and have them fully primed and set for the right oil BEFORE initial startup and you shouldn't have any issues.

Seahorse, Is it on web server somewhere? Otherwise I can give you a spot to ftp it to.
Thanks,
Erich

Seahorse, I have an electronic copy, I can break it down into parts if that is helpful at all?
Why not let the Technitian take the fall if something goes wrong. I do!!!!!!!! We all make mistakes, better the experienced than the unexperienced. Let the dealer do the complicated stuff, it's easier on you anyway. Some techs charge twice the price for customer related help. I take visa,mc,am ex,. Just kidding, I only take cash!!!
