Should I remove the oil injection on my 1990 200 Yamaha

I Just baught a skeeter with this motor on it ,1990 200 Yamaha,it has precision blend on the couling.
Ive been told I should remove the oil injection and mix the gas so I don't burn it up .
    How dependable are these ?
I don't want to remove it ,unless there have been a lot of problems, this is my first motor I don't have to mix the fuel on but have heard a lot of bad things about oil injection and dont want to burn it up.

    Need some advise,Thanks

Nice boat, I think the consensus around here is if you are out of warranty to do it. The good thing about it is you lose your on-board oil tank and save some weight! Also, if you are adding Ring Free, Sea Foam and/or Stabil its not that big of deal to add your oil into the mix.

Yamaha oil injection's are one of the best out there, it it were mine i would not disable it, but if you did i would not blame you.

Doesn't that old of motor still have the overheat warning buzzer and low oil buzzer? Thought the motor shut down to an idle if any of these things occured?

The previous owner of my 99' skeeter w/ a 96' 175 Yamaha Pro V disabled the oil injection. It kinda does give you piece of mind that no matter what as long as the motor is running its getting oil when its premixed. I'm having a warning decal made to make sure i don't forget to add oil each time I fill up.

I've never had a yammy oiler go bad, even on an 86 the low oil alarm was dead on even if the engine reservoir was near the low line,.I trust mine and all of my yammy techs told me to leave it alone unless the tanks broke and you dont want to replace it,But if it gives you piece of mind go for it

Keep the oiler. It has the metal gear teeth, not like the Mercury nylon teeth that they use.

    Good luck!

Some good advice on here. You do whatever makes you feel good, but if I were you, I'd trust it the way it is. I've seen the sensor fail, the remote pump fail, and every time the horn has gone off and the engine lowered itself into the "safe" mode.

The Metal teeth on the oiler is really a Brass on Brass gear which has a slot on the end of the shaft that connects to the slot on the Oil pump itself. There is one large brass gear that sits on the bottom of the crank shaft. The spiral brass gear resides on the front bottom half of the crankcase. There is a slot on the end of a metal rod that is on the end spiral gear. This slot on the rod connects to the metal drive spline on the oil pump. The pump is attached to the block to insure constant lock up to the spline gear. The oil pump has a manifold on it and 6 tubes that feed oil behind the carbs into the intake manifold. A very good system. I'd leave it on. Just test your sensors every year and make sure your remote tank pumps up to the engine tank. Check your idle settings on the pump per the manual and you should have a long happy time with your boat.

Re: Should I remove the oil injection on my 1990 200 Yamaha (chipper)

More outboards get blown up from having the oil injection removed and somebody forgets to premix the oil than leaving it as it was...

You might say never but honestly one day you'll let somebody borrow it, drive it or you'll sell it to somebody who blows it up because of your modification.

I wouldn't touch it. The system is really reliable as is.

There are lots more important powerhead killers to worry about that the oil injection system.

I test my remote pump every year but have never tested the sensors. How do you do that? I have a 1991 Pro-V 150.

    Thanks,

    Tom

    Distracting! What did you say?

Oh, yea, just monitor the remote tank oil level. Do it every time you plug in the charger. If you see that it looks about the same level as the last time, turn the key to "on" and remove the water check nipple from the bottom of the main tank. As the oil runs into a catch-can, the pump should turn on and refill it. Or you could use a multimeter and check resistances.
