That white ring at the top under the piece with the 2 nipples, should just screw off like a nut and it will all come apart after you get that ring off. Just check the Service Manual and that is how it comes apart. That white ring is called a Nut and it unscrews from the top half with the 2 nipples on it and then it just pulls down.
That was my thought but it won't unscrew????????????????????????????

Don't know what to tell you, but that is the way the Yamaha Service Manual says it comes apart. You might have to get a little rough with it with a big pair of Channel Locks.
Dont want to get to rough they are expensive. My 08 250 has one that is just like that. It does not have the nut. The whole bottom cannister unscrews. Mine was so tight I had to borrow a tool that fit into the grooves on the cannister in three places and finally got it. Tried the big channel locks, no go.
The problem is the plastic they used is sensitive to ethonol and will swell. My service tech has said that putting the bottom section in the freezer for a few hours will make it shrink down so reinstalling is easy. Not sure if that would work on the whole filter, but since you have it off already, might be worth a try. Not 100% sure it would work as I think the top section will be shrinking also (or so one would think).
Thanks for the tip. I put it in the freezer over night and it came off like a charm.

Glad to here it.
You would think Yamaha would have a replacement housing made of a different material as this issue has been known for years. But nope - if you buy a replacement it's made of the same plastic and will swell also. Go figure...
I guess since it's pretty easy to deal with it's not worth them investing the money to redesign.
At $117 a pop it's worth is for them to NOT make it from another material.....![]()

I don't know why it is even needed. It has a 10 micron filter before it and 2 filters after it plus the hidden screens before the HP pump, so why is it even needed. If I ever break mine, I will not put one back on it. Thats just me.
You need it, that is your fuel/water seperator.![]()

And the racon in the boat will do the same thing so why so many filters and screeens on an out board.

Mike, I asked that same question a while back!! I'm still at a loss why Yamaha has so many filters on these engines. Don't think Mercury does on their injected engines??? Especially that $90 "Strainer". My Chevrolet Avalanche has one inline fuel filter that I recently changed after over 100K miles, and it was running fine before I changed it. It would seem to me that the 10 micron filter/separator and one very good filter would suffice to clean up the fuel. The only other thing I can think of is that some of the parts of the medium and high pressure pumps come apart and Yamaha added filters at multiple locations to keep the this material out of the injector system. I have heard of people having trash / plastic in the VST filter - that VST filter is after two other filters, so the stuff must be coming from somewhere in the fuel system of the engine. Just thinking........
