2000 150hp vmax hpdi not getting fuel(please help)

Ok, so were on the home stretch of the skeeter project and we just did the maintenance stuff to the outboard. We replaced water pump, put in new plugs, fuel filter, greased prop shaft, etc... We hooked it up to the hose to test run it and seat everything. It started right up and ran great for about 5 minutes. It was mostly all at idle but we put in gear for short intervals at low rpms as well. Then it started to sputter out and ran out of fuel. We though the test tank had just run too low so we put some more fuel in and tried to start it again. It would turn over perfect, but wouldn't start, so we tested the lines and pump ball but it just wouldn't suck fuel. What is my problem? We're thinking that a bad fuel pump would be ridiculous because everything had been fine and the motor has only been run a few times on the trailer in the last 6 months. It was literally running perfect and then just ran out of fuel. Is there a reset procedure or weird electrical issue that could cause this? Any advice would be a huge help.

You didn't mention if the ball got hard and stayed hard after you put more fuel in the tank. If the primer bulb won't stay semi hard it's obviously not a fuel pump issue, but an issue with your primer bulb, fuel line leak, or anti siphon valve if you have one. Do you have access to one of those external 6 gallon fuel tanks you can temporarily hook up and see if the motor stays running on it? That would tell you a lot.

We were testing it on an external 6 gallon tank. We still used the main intake line to the motor which has the bulb in-line and it(the bulb) wasn't getting hard or putting fuel into the little canister in the motor. It looked like it was pushing air in, then coming right back out.
