    4stroke question

I'm looking at a 2003 Skeeter 17 foot bass boat that has a new (less than 25 hours) 115 4 stroke on it. What is your opinion of the 4 stroke?
some guys I know really like them and others don't. Any help appreciated. Oh yeah. I think the motor is a 2009.

    Re: 4stroke question (lperry)

I've serviced alot of these in the past few years (mostly for winterizing) and they are well built and dependable. Takes light sips of fuel. Only problem that I've heard of from owners is the holeshot is very slow on most boats due to the weight.

    Re: 4stroke question (lperry)

What model boat do you have? I owned a 2004 SX180 with the F115 on it and it was great. Holeshot left some to be desired, but it wasn't terrible. If you aren't worried about top speed you can put a lower pitch prop on and improve holeshot.

I didn't have a bit of trouble with it for the two years I owned it. It's great on gas when you are cruising, not so good at WOT but what is?

Maintenance is simple, oil change and L/U each year plus winterization. Don't get scared off by some folks' claims that maintenance is a real hassle, or that it's expensive. It isn't.

The 4 stroke was so quiet I could hold a conversation with my wife at 35 - 40 mph. (Maybe that's why I switched to a 2 stroke! )

Ask Dirtmonkey what he thinks of his.

If I had to downsize I wouldn't hesitate going back to an SX180!

    4 stroke hole shot

    http://s94.photobucket.com/alb...0.flv

That is the F150 on an 18 ft Xpress. A guy I work with has a F115 on basically the the same boat in the video and he loves it. I have seen the holeshot and it is pretty good.

I own a F150 and I changed the oil, filter, plugs and lower unit oil for 100 and change last month.

I have a SX190 with a 150 four stroke. It will jump on plane in 3 sec. Hole shot? I dare to compare it to any other motor. You must be looking at a SX180. With a 115, I doubt you will hole shot as quick as my boat but I would not hesitate buying it because of the hole shot. And at 50+MPH my buddy can hear me talk.
Maintenance? 2 quarts of oil $5, filter (expensive) $22, gear oil $7, fogging oil, $5, total $39 for the do it yourself'er. When you fog a four stroke, you just take out the plugs, spray some fogg in them, crank it without the plugs in it, and that's it. Put the plugs back in and you're ready for next year.
    I love my Four Stroke!

The SX 180 is 17' 8" My SX 190 is 18' 5". The numbers are not exactly the length of the boat.

I love my four stroke. You always hear the horror stories and the "four strokes suck" crowd, but it really comes down to what you want. For what I want and need, my four stroke SPANKS my VMAX. My hole shot is fine for me, as is my speed. Unless you're worried about a couple MPH, four strokes do just fine. I love mine, and don't see myself ever going back to a two stroke motor.

    Re: 4stroke question (esoxfly)

I wish I could have found one with a four stroke when I bought mine. My last 2 tin boats had them and they are sweet! Mine had suzuki/johnson though, but my dad has a 150 yammi and no problems to date.

Plus you can run them at low rpm's without worry of being to hard on them. That's a plus when you have to go through a lot of no-wake zones, or want to troll.

I owned a 2004 SX-180 w/ F115 for 4 years and I loved it. Hole shot wasn't bad at all but top end was only about 45 mph. Absolutely no problems with the motor!

    Re: 4stroke question (lperry)

I had the pleasure of running a F150 (4s 150) all week last week while on my honeymoon fishing the FL coast down in Ten Thousand Islands.

AWESOME ...... the HUGE (40 minute long) no-wake zones down there actually had me saying to myself 'glad I didn't have a 2s'. Fuel consuption was nothing compared to alot of 2s's I've ran.

The sheer quitness was want amazed me the most probably. My new bride and I continually commented on how easy it was to talk compared to our HPDI (idling and running).

Holeshot on a 22' bay w/ 150 was nothing ...... hit the throttle and it just went. never tried WOT due to all the speed restrictions down there (30mph in channel and 20mph in the mangroves) ...... IDK prop pitch, but did notice it was a Yamaha Saltwater SS prop ........ boat lift didn't allow me to walk to the back of the boat to inspect close enough.

    Re: 4stroke question (Ranger391v)

I'll never burn oil again!!! As far as holeshot as soon as I hit it, I start trimming and can do 0-40 in about 4-5 seconds and WOT in about 6-8

    Re: 4stroke question (dirtmonkey)

I have a F225 TLR Yamaha on a Z 20 Ranger. The boat is an 09 and the motor is an 07. I actually had the dealer take and swap the two stroke off for the four stroke it might be a little slower in the top end but the reliability and quietness verses the speed were worth it for me. Holeshot is still decent and I still top out at about 63.5 MPH on GPS. Not as fast as some people might want but I live in CT and our biggest lake is only just over 5,000 acres, with a 45MPH speed limit.
