    250 HPDI that won't start

Seeing if any one else has had this issue with their Yamaha.

I have a 2009 250 HPDI that 4 times in the last year has left me stranded on the lake. The circumstances leading to the situation are similar: Very hot, muggy, sunny morning. I run the engine about 15 minutes to my fishing spot, and shut it off. Fish for 45 minutes or so. Start the engine, it runs for 5-15 seconds then shuts off. The engine will crank but will not restart. In the time it takes for me to get towed in, loaded on the trailer and drive to the dealer (2-3 hours), something happens and the engine ALWAYS starts at the dealer. The engine does not set a code in the ECU. The dealer has worked their fanny off trying to replicate the problem and fix this issue, and I have no fault with them at all.

Anybody else had or seen this problem and if so what was the fix?

    Steve

Ouch. I am no mechanic and probably not much help but just letting you know that I hate that for you. There is nothing more aggravating than having that happen. I had something very similar happen with an Optimax that I had on my previous boat. They finally "thought" they had it fixed so I sold the boat because I was sick of breaking down. Talked to the new owner and he said he has had no problems at all.

Mine was an electrical issue with the computer. Good luck man! Hang in there!

I bought a new demo Ranger back in Jan of this year, it was an '08 Yamaha 250 HPDI with only 8 hours, and on my maiden voyage with it, it started up just fine and ran great to the first fishing spot. I fished for 45 minutes, went to fire it up and it would crank and crank but not fire. I pumped the fuel bulb, no difference, switched fuel tanks, no difference, trimmed motor all the way down/up, no difference. I then gave it gas via hotfoot and finally got it to fire but it was running rough. I headed straight back to the trailer and loaded it up. Took it back to dealer, they did not really find anything wrong, although the mechanic said the TPS voltage was slightly off, he said a few other minor things he did but he did not elaborate - hmmmmmmm. I guess it's fixed, I haven't had it back on the water since then, damn work!!

    Good luck!

Could be fuel, could be electrical - who knows? Does your state have a "Lemon Law"? As much as we pay for these engines, if they can't fix it to make it dependable, they should replace it. I believe that in Texas if you have the same issue 4 times and they can't repair the problem, they must replace the unit. Good Luck.

Dont know if this helps but my bud bought a 250 HPDI in 06 and had a bad fuel pump from the factory...had similar symptoms as yours. Swapped a new one and he is running like a champ.
