    1998 VMax 175 issues

Had problems with my boat cranking a few months back. It was real diffucult to crank intitially each trip, but after intial cranking runs at higher speeds real well. When you throttle down off plane it would start going dead. At this point you could bump the choke a couple of times as it was dying and that would keep you running so you could idle. Took it to the shop and and they replaced the plugs and told me the oil was mixing to rich and fouling out plugs (they adjusted that also). Took it home and it has run good for 3 months and is now doing the same thing again with the addition that sometimes it won't crank after you have stopped to fish a while. You can let it sit for about 10 minutes after it fails to crank and it will usually fire up. Talked with the mechanic to today and they recommend rebuilding the carbs. Said everything else checks out and this is the problem. I bought the boat used in Nov 08 and it ran like a top when I got it and never sat up all winter or spring until this problem started. Do you think I am ready for rebuild or is there something they are overlooking.

Do you charge your battery and is it relatively new? Also, how's the fuel pumps? Is the fuel line pump bulb always hard?

You absolutely must charge the battery. Cranking batteries use a lot of energy to crank the engine and work the trim unit. The running you do probably doesn't charge the battery back to it's potential and each trip out continues to drain the battery lower and lower. After you get that battery back up to snuff, see if things work a little better.

Also, those carbs probably need rebuilt.

11 years is a long time to collect dirt and varnish, if they've never been cleaned and rebuilt.
