I've got a 2002 200hp and the plug boots screw on to the plug wire (I know...how stupid). The wire is glued into the coil on mine. If I buy a coil it comes with the coil and the plug wire. Then the plug cap has a screw that goes down on the wires inside the insulation.

how could i check with out being on water
You could use a plug gap tester. It's a plug like device that plugs into the boot on one end and onto the plug on the other. If you get a spark across the gap...you're good. You could just ground the plug against the block and have someone turn the engine over (with the kill switch out). If it jumps the gap with a strong spark...you're good. You could order a new coil with wire...not necessary. If you think you pulled some of the wires out...you could use a wire cutters and cut off about 1/4" of the end and re-screw it back in on new wires. I'd say the last choice would be the easiest and best method of ensuring you have enough contact with plug wires in the insulation.

They stuff up every now and again and need to be replaced.
Test with an OHM meter. From memory they should be 4k-6k ohms.
One of mine was 11k ohms and was making my 1997 Vmax 150 drop a cylinder after running WOT with a heavy load for 1 minute or more. Very annoying it took a year to find.
To test, you unscrew it, measure resistance from one side to the other and screw it back on.
That is why. So just screw it on and go boating![]()
