Motor noise at idle in gear

I have an 07' 200 HPDI. I'm hearing a strange noise when the motor is in gear fwd or reverse until I bump the rpm up to about 900. It sounds like the gears are not fully meshed and it is kinda bouncing around in the gear. I think once I get a little more rpm there is enough pressure to hold the gears tight against each other.
I was looking at the maintenance manual and there is a why to adjust the gear backlash, but not something I could do. Anyone experience these symptoms? And is there any way to check this without disassembling the lower? When I turn the prop while its in gear how much play should there be if any? I'm gonna check and change the lower oil and see if makes any difference and the the prop nut is plenty tight enough. Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: Motor noise at idle in gear (hurricane)

If your dealer is close, I'd suggest getting them to check it out. Lower units can go in a heartbeat if there's something wrong. Of course, I'd also do a change on the lube as a cheap fix (if it's a little low and is the cause of the noise).

If it's still under warranty, don't mess with it, just get it to a shop.

If you check the level in the lower unit and find it low, remove the lower fill screw and see if it has metal on it.If its alot then take it in for sure but i would take it in either way,It should not be making noise period.

Re: Motor noise at idle in gear (JOHN202)

Thanks for your thoughts, and taking it in was my first thought because it is still under warranty. But I hate having to take it in, I know sounds weird but I like to fix it myself if I can.
I did a little searching on the net and found a little info on this and it seems to be referred to as prop chatter. Anyone ever heard of this term. It seems it may be common with larger stainless props. I read that on the impeller housing the plastic insert and wave washer on the top is there to hold the shaft up and prevent this noise. When you reinstall the impeller housing you should hold the shaft up and push these two pieces down.
This is all news to me anyone ever dealt with this?
