storing a motor for a few months question

I have a 225HPDI that I need to store for a few months. If I turn off the fuel valve and let the engine run out of gas, will that prevent varnish buildup?

Last winter mine sat up for over 2 months and wish I would have drained the old gas out of the tank.I have a water separator which helps out but all I can tell you is put stabil in the tank to help with the gas going bad.I really dont think running it without the fuel out of the motor will burn every bit out of it.

I only use seafoam in the gas, and then fog the engine. Works like a charm after storing it for almost 6 months over winter.

Put Stabil in the gas and make sure you run it long enough to get in the motor

Make sure to use the Marine Stabil formula for Ethanol...It is blue/purple, not the red stuff...

I would use more than just Seafoam. Seafoam is a good product for preventing carbon but not the best at keeping fuel fresh. I would use either a MFG product, Marine Stabil, or my preference PRI-G.

You can not fog an HPDI, or at least properly. You can shoot the cylinders but that is it. You can not and should not inject fogging oil in a running HPDI.

PRI-G will keep the fuel from breaking down
good stuff, and 1oz treats 8 gallons of fuel

Thanks guys. I have not ever seen or heard of PRI-G. Where can you get it? I use Seafoam all the time. I thought it prevented fuel breakdown.

Still wondering if I need to shut the valve and run the gas out?

West Marine carries it. You can go to their site and find a dealer as well http://www.priproducts.com 1 oz treats 16 gallons. I have used it for almost 10 years. I use it in my MC as well as all my small engines. My generator can sit for a year or more and it starts with one pull. Their site is an interesting read if nothing else.

It is widely used, mainly exclusively, in the Commercial Marine industry. They make PRI-G and PRI-D (for diesel) Their test results with E-10 fuel seem to outperform everything. I treat every tank in my HPDI with PRI-G as well as Ringfree. PRI also cleans injectors and combats carbon. IMO as far as a fuel conditioner and stabilizer it is top notch. I used it in my Yamaha 130 for 10 years of the almost 16 years I owned it. Carbs were never touched and it ran like a top the day I sold it. IMO it is the best kept product secret in the non commercial Marine industry.

from the research that i have read, if you have any chance at all that there is gas in your tank that has ethanol in it then you need to drain all the gas you can out of the tanks. don't leave any gas in the tanks at all if possible. the ethanol attracts water and will then cause problems down the road.

Living in Ontario we have no choice but to store our boats over the winter which is pretty much Dec thru Apil. To prep for the layup i do the following:

    - Treat the gas with Stabil and run it through the engine.
    - Fog the engine with fogging oil sprayed for 10 seconds in each cylinder (crank the engine with the kill switch off to disburse the oil)
    - Drain the VST tank of gas
    - Keep the gas tank full because a 1/2 empty tank will cause condensation to form inside the tank.
    - Replace the water seperator filter.
    - Change the lower unit gear oil

Plugs and other filters are changed in the spring.
