friend in need of some help....

    hello,
I need some help in solving a problem, ill let you in on the situation. My friend just bought a boat, (skeeter 98 202, with a 200 ox66 yamaha, v200tlrw i think) and it wouldnt start, (yea i know, bought it and it wouldnt start, got it site unseen) anyway, it will turn over. he called me, knowing that i know nothing about the mechanicals, yet i know the boards, and am good with searching.. and it could help...i went with trusted laptop in hand and after the hours of the search button..figured it wasnt getting gas..cleaned clear filter it was ok, and took apart the canister, with help from a post here the VST or high pressure pump...i think its called and found it was dirty, clogged and the nastiest thing you have ever seen,,, now here comes the trouble.. is it shot? we cleaned it the best we could and re hooked it up, turn the key and i could hear a faint noise comming from it..squeeze the bulb and it would start for a few seconds.....then die..are we headed in the right direction? is there anything else that we need to look for? again i dont know much about these i have a 150 carb yamaha.. anything else come to mind that we need to look at, it has alot of carbon built up, we changed the plugs already...he is looking to get another pump kit (man they are pricey) but is there anything else that it could be...
i know this is wordy but please let me know if you i need more info...
as always thanks for any help
    brooks.

Eleven year old engine and no history of being taken care of. Start at the fuel tank and check all of the hoses and primer bulb for leaks. Then check the fuel pumps for leaks. Even if they don't leak, I'd suggest replacing them anyway.

How's the gas, new and fresh? Was there gas in the tank (probably contaminated) when your friend got the boat? Drain the tank. Add sea foam to the tank to help remove any moisture in there and put fresh fuel in it.

    Replace all filters.

I've also got a 150 carb, I don't know much on the fuel injected model. It does sound like that motor sat for a while. Probably the whole fuel system is gummed up from the tank to the injecters. Oh, thanks again for the siggy!!!

you need a fuel pressure gauge
    winky blinky
    factory manual

    it sounds like the fuel
    bad pumps
    o2 sensor needs cleaning

Yeah, clean the fuel tanks, check fuel lines to the filter housing, get a fuel pressure gauge and check fuel pressure to fuel rail, it should read 32-36psi. I would go ahead and change out the three low pressure fuel pumps just for maintenence. If the the VST tank was that dirty, makes me wonder how much of that stuff got in your injectors. Hydro Tec cleans injectors for $25 each.

well a little update on the situation here....
a new fuel pump was ordered and all the gaskets...really expensive...but arrived this morning and was put in. pumped the bulb and it fired right up, running lots of cleaner in the cleaned gas tank, we cleaned everything we could get too that had to do with fuel..
he left and took it out the water, called me for info (i was at work) as the oil alarm was going off and battery voltage was low around 10 he said.. off to the store for a new battery he went, new battery was installed (old one wasnt old just small, prob a bad cell)
alarm still present, i searched the boards and was relaying to him out on the water what i found, found that it wasnt filling the oil tank (in cowl), tried emergency switch, and it would work, so i read on here oil pump is ok, prob a oil filter or the internal oil pump of large oil tank.
he ran around for some time, said it was smoking alot, (seafoam, decarbing?)
then he called and said he blew the hub, or spun it i guess is the right term, but he is 3 miles from the boat dock and is just going to fish all the the way back, no spare prop, and hopefully trolling motor will last.....
last i talked with him he was on the fish, found a nice hump drifting with the wind, and they were biting...
so now im researching for a hub kit for a 98 v200tlrw and what it takes to test the big oil tank pump....
hes still out there i think...... no calls yet for a tow, i live 5 min from lake...
    any ideas on the pump???
    thanks.

And the drama unfolds. Did he make it back? Did he catch any fish?

Sounds like it is going to take a little while to work the bugs out of the engine. You guys should plan on doing a lot of running very close to the ramp. At least until you feel comfortable with the motor.

if it pumped oil to the tank on the motor when you used the emergency switch my guess is the pump is good as it works when you flip the switch manually.Theres a computer board that controls that, maybe it is bad, also pricey. My first hammer so I don't know alot about them.good luck

    update number 3
well he did make it back, said he had pretty good bag prolly round 20 pounds, which for belton aint to bad.
i met with him and we started tearing the oil system down..starting with the big tank. he filled it before his first run, but it never pulled from it..thank god youll see why...first thing we did was drain it...and you should have seen the goop that pour out...like jelly or snot...you get the picture..cleaned the lil filter as it was jammed, all the hoses then looked at the tank pump. we blew some air through it, and hit it with 12 volts it started to pump. hooked the wires back up and hit the emergency switch and it started trying to pump so i think its still good. then we decided to check the rest..drained the lil oil tank (under cowling) and it had some goop, cleaned it and tube strainer thingy..blew out all the lines..the lines going from lil tank to main motor pump were clean as a whistle..so on that end it looked ok..i took a pic of some of the light green goop that was blown out, ill post it just so you see what not taking care of a boat looks like.. twas nasty... hes getting more oil tomm to fill it all back and see if she will try to fill the lil tank. any thoughts???... of course hes doing this while im at work, and hes not so i get to do all the searching, thank the lord for this site...and the search button....lol...
mike rowe should have been there it was a nasty job for sure...
    thanks...more to come...mabey...lol

I'm betting on a bad sensor in the little tank. Maybe you could try cleaning it up also. If that doesn't work after cleaning, then the box with the emergency switch is bad or the sensor and will need replacing. As stated above, sort of expensive (used to be $115 back in '90's).
