Trim/Tilt Question

'85 GT150

I have a goofy tilt/trim problem that has existed for a LONG time according to the previous owner.

When I trim ALL the way down at the moment the cylinder bottoms out, the pump make a squealing sound. At that point, my tilt function is locked up. The pump will spin, but the cylinder will not extend for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds it works great again until it gets bottomed out.

The fluid is full
I tried to bleed the system last year and that did not help.

I can live with the problem, but I would really like to fix it.

It has a sticky valve internally and that was somewhat common back then. Later versions had improved parts, but it is not worth the time, trouble, or expense if everything else is functional.

I assume the valves have to be replaced not just cleaned up which is why you say not to bother?

What kind of expense would it be? I ask because it just annoys the heck out of me, however, if the price is high, I can deal with the minor issue.

Do I have to tear the thing apart, or just remove the Tilt/Trim unit and replace one of the valves on the back?
