For anybody who has had fiberglass work done

Had a tournament yesterday and the boat ramp we put in at was built by a bunch of genius's. There is no beach parking and you have to park your boat at a offshore dock with slips. They weren't smart enough to build a break wall around the dock so when the wind is blowing out of the south it gets beat up by waves and also boat wake. It's 8.5ft deep so my 8' blades wouldn't hold me and I had to tie off to the dock. One guy who tried to park in the slip next to mine was fighting the wake and it pushed him towards the back of my boat so I ran to the back deck to push him away and luckily he didn't get Into my boat, just my anchor light which broke. Well today I was popping my rub rail back in after it got pulled out from the side I docked on and I noticed something behind the trailer fender bunk. A chunk of gel coat/fiberglass missing from the boat rubbing up against something on the dock from all the waves. Maybe a exposed bolt under the water, I'm not quite sure. Let's just say I won't be fishing anymore tournaments out of this ramp unless they let us load up on the trailer and then weigh in.

My question for the guys who have had work done is, how long did the repair take and what kind of money does it look like I'll be forking out for it. Here's a picture of the damage.

Ouch!! Sorry to see that. Should be a simple enough fix, no idea on the cost though.

I've had similar work done. Not really a big deal time wise, looking at 2-3 days. cost tough to tell from photo, is it in only one color for gel? Who ever fixes it will have to remove boat from trailer. From what I've paid looking at around a grand? may want to call insurance...get any other gel damage repaired, new rub rail, fix your light too...

Same thing happened to my new boat this weekend! A nail head on the side of the dock was sticking out. I tied off the boat and went to get my truck. Loaded the boat and then noticed a huge chuck of fiberglass and gel coat gone. I went back and found the nail. I was fuming for a time.
I took it to the dealer today for normal service and he knows someone who can fix it........expensive I predict but I cannot stand looking at it.
Just part of boat ownership I concluded.

    for both you and willie.

I had a chunk taken out of the side of my old ProCraft a few years back and I'm still pizzed about it. This is one of the main reasons I bought a pair of 12' Talons for the Ranger. If I never have to tie up to a dock ever again, that would be just fine with me.

Snodogg, yes it is only one color with flake. I know two fiberglass places near me who does nice work from what I've heard and seen. But i wonder if it would be best to take it to my nearest ranger dealer and have them do it (if they do fiberglass and gelcoat work) and also get my rub rail replaced because it did get scuffed and cut in a few places as well. Heck that's what I pay $500 a year for, let the insurance pay for it.

flyingwillie, Man that sucks. Atleast my boat ain't new. I would of cried right there standing at the ramp if I was in your shoes. To be honest, I think a drop or two might of rolled when I seen this today on my 2006.

Boatbuggy, living here in Florida 12 footers are not really required cause were usually only fishing in 3-6ft of water. This dock just runs out a long ways into open water of about 9ft. But funny story, one of my buddies that was there put his 8ft talon down to see if he could get it to stick and when he went to leave, his talon was stuck down and wouldn't go back up. He didn't know though until he was heading to load up and his talon was shaking back and fourth from it being stuck down and dragging. He ended up having to remove his talon right there infront of the ramp and fold his seats down in his SUV and shove it in there. I think it was a rough day for a lot of people

And that's exactly why I got the tilt brackets and quick disconnects.

Lucky (depending on how you look at it) I am jinxed by motor cowlings....seems like every time I turn around on the water, I am putting another ding in it. On my week long trip to Wisconsin with my last boat, I was tied to our dock on a windy day (I tie about 10 of the air filled bumpers to the boat AND the dock) when the geriatric next door pontoon owner decides to take his 26ft pontoon out with his wife. Un ties and blows right into the .....you guessed it.......Motor Cowling!! Bounces up and down on it trying to get his sled started. I could have cused a fuss but it was right in line with the damage I had already done to it. My new-to-me boat got initiated on a nail sticking out from a dock that I was just fishing. Thank heavens for sharpies!!

Hey Brad- I once got an estimate from AdvancedMarine™ for a silver dollar sized gouge in the front. I actually purchased the boat in question from this establishment, You DON'T want to take it there..

I had one about the size of a Quarter in the back and it was 1500.00 to fix. Had another above the the rub rail 2" x 8" was 4300.00 Each time it took about a week to Fix. I claimed on my insurance. Call Ranger Or your Ranger Dealer and see who they recommend to fix it.

From your picture, and comparing the numerous repairs Ive had done over the years...maybe upwards of $2000 (but probably less). You will want to obtain the gel and flake from Ranger to ensure a match. As far as time, that really depends on how busy your glass guy is.

Thanks everybody for the Info, I'm going to be calling my nearest ranger dealer and see if they do fiberglass work. If not I will have to take it to another place I know of that appears to do nice work. I will be sure that they gel and flake is ordered from Ranger so it will match. And I will be claiming this under insurance aswell

Brad you may as well take it to the glass shops for estimates because thats probably what your local dealer will do. Get references for their gel work, especially flake.

And mmusky, I hope your insurance company got kissed to.

UPDATE: I got a quote from the Local Marine fiberglass shop today.....$550. The area is tiny but almost all the damage is where the red flake is.......hence the expense.

Woah $550 ain't bad at all compared to some of these numbers that are being thrown out. If mine is only $550 I won't even bother going through insurance. I will update this post once I get mine looked at and a estimate

Brad, mine is less than the size of a half dollar. Had it been on the white portion of the boat it would have been less than half the estimate. This guy has a great reputation so I am expecting a perfect fix.

I took it by the fiberglass shop today and they took a look at the boat, they threw out estimated numbers for this big spot along with several other spots that took damage from 2 weekends ago. A got a spot on the rear port side chine and also up at the top of the keel. This spot that I posted in the picture is at $1000 alone. That's a rough guess. They will be calling Ranger parts dept tomorrow and ordering all the materials needed for the repairs and then they will be faxing me the full estimate. I will let y'all know when I get a full number, I'm guessing around $2000.

Hey Brad- I'm up in Citrus County and there is a guy here that runs the local Tournaments but His main job is fiberglass guy... His name is Dave Cutler. He may be less expensive? The guys at Apopka Marine would have His numbers..

I don't think the numbers they gave me is high, it's a lot of work and time consuming and at $85/hour plus costs of materials I would say the place I took it to today is about right. Very nice guys and this is actually the first time going to them. May switch over to them for my motor maintenance. But looking at their work online, they do very nice work and they do a fair share of fiberglass/gel work. They showed me the project the are working on at the moment, replacing a fuel tank in a deep hull saltwater boat which requires them to cut a hole in the floor of the boat. Sounds scary to just cut a hole in the deck but they act as it was just another normal job. I will upload some pics once my boat gets repaired.
