Weird thing with my E-Tec 225 HO!!!

Guys, This has happened only twice since I have owned my E-Tec 225 HO (April 2005) with alot of tournament time in 2005...It happened this weekend for the second time...First time I was running abourt 5000 RPM's and the motor just shut off....No warning at all...No alarms...No spits or sputters, just died..>Wrote it off as an anomally. This weekend outfishing, the same thing happened only difference was I was only running about 2500 RPM's...Again no warning, no alarms, no spitting orsputtering....Just quit!!!

Any of the Evinrude guys heard of this problem or any ideas before i take it to the dealer???

I don't have the VIN with me as I am at work...but can provide it tonight if it would help with the diagnosis!!!

    Thanks in advance!

Did the engine kill when you hit your jack plate switch?

I have a manual jackplate....The motor died unexpectedly! No other systems were being used except for the main power switch and my color GPS and depth finder...

I think I know where you are going with this I remember reading a thread here about the current draw from a hydraulic jackplate causign the motor to die....again I have a manual jackplate...

    Still looking for any suggestions....

Duh You did say manual didn't you! Sorry bout that. I have an E-tec 225 HO. The problem I had is every time I hit the jack plate button the engine would kill. 3000, 5000, 1200 RPM didn't mater. I check apm's and voltage on every connection in the boat and on the engine while running and neither me or my dealer nor Evinrude have figured it out yet. I connected my jack plate to the trolling motor battries and it never did it again. Please let me know what you guy's come up with.

Start the engine with the water muffs and wiggle/tap the kill switch.

My key switch on my 2005 294 was overly sensitive...start the motor and tap the key. I had several keys on my key chain and it was enough weight that when i hit a wave it would kill the motor

Check the key switch. I had that happened to my 2005 Etec HO and 2004 DI 225 HO. Both times it was the key switch. Had to do with the thickness of the mounting surface of the key switch. Thinned the area up with a file and never had the problem again.

On fuel injected engines, a lack of fuel pressure will also make the motor quit just like turning a key to OFF. Don't get hung up that it is only an ignition problem.

I helped out a boater recently whose 2003 'Evinrude DI (FICHT) sometimes would just quit and would not restart. Other times it ran fine for weeks or quit and fire right back up and run fine.

Those kinds of problems will drive you nuts, as in my case, or make you turn to drink like Rusty and CM, and some bass fisherman I know.

Long story short, I found it by accident, not due to any supernatural troubleshooting ability on my part. The purple wire in the boat wiring harness had an intermittent and when it opened up, the electric fuel pump would shut off and the motor instantly died. That's why sometimes it would fire up or not.

    Joeschmoe,

You may have a flakey crankshaft position sensor, as long as the tech knows that everything else checks out OK.

I agree, there arent many things that wll totally shut down an Etec but crankshaft position sensor is one of them. I have had two fail (supposed been redesigned to be more reliable now). Anyway when mine failed it did not act right until replaced so I am uncertain if this is a CPS in your case, but if all else turns up normal I would look at the sensor.
