97 - 175 hp. Got home and when I raised the motor all the way up, I heard something roll down inside the bottom cowling. Took the cover off and found a loose bolt resting near the front latch. Bolt is approx. 1/2" long, not quite 3/8" in dia. and has #5 stamped on the head. Looks like the same one's used in the carb. drains, but i checked and they were all there. Is this bolt used anywhere else? Thought it might be one that got away from the repair guy but I would like to be sure.
When I bought my new Pathfinder last August, I had a bolt loose too. It was hanging out of the mid section cowling. I cannot for the life of me remember where it went, but the dealer did say IT WAS NEEDED!

You may take it to a dealer and ask them. Better safe than sorry.
I had the very same issue on my 2000 hpdi. Never did find where it came from and never had an issue because of it. I still have that loose bolt in the glove box!

The mechanic may have dropped the bolt last time it was in the shop. He just got another one to save time looking for the lost one.I've found a couple in my Yamaha a few years back after a shop visit.
My mechanic found 3 loose nuts in the lower pan. Turned out to be the nuts on the top (inside) cowling...
