Gettin' Oil to my 175 Johnson

My oil sending unit malfunctioned on my 175 Johnson Fast Strike and caused about $3,000 in damages to the motor. The mechanic who fixed it said that he has it now where I mix the oil directly into the gas. The only thing that he didn't mention is what to do with the oil reservoir. As of right now, the motor is using the oil mixed in the gas as well as oil from the oil reservoir. I have tried numerous times to get ahold of the mechanic, but he is 300 miles away and never answeres the phone. My Question is, can I disconnect the oil reservoir and just use the oil in the gas and what do I do with the reservoir itself and the hose that runs into it?

Sounds like he didn't disable the VRO, $3K in damage? Did you blow the PH? If you are still pumping oil from the tank and mixing with fuel then you are running 25:1 ratio and sounds like a breakin mixture. BUT if the OMS/VRO failed and was disabled then the line from the tank should have been capped off, the sensor lines (2) unplugged and the oiling port on the OMS capped off. If this has been done then the tank can be removed from the boat and the oil can be used in your fuel tank. The oil tank holds 1.8 Gal of oil. If you are NOT breaking in the motor then mix the fuel to oil at a 50:1 ratio 6 gallons gas to 16 oz oil, if breaking in then 6 Gals gas to 32 oz. oil, for 10 hrs. Then revert to the 50:1 ratio.

$3,000 in damages came from replacing three out of six pistons and a whole bunch of other problems that arose from not gettin's any oil.

I don't exactly know what an OMS and a VRO is? (not very outboard motor inclined)

I don't think that anything has been capped off because the last time that I had the boat out, the oil level in the reservoir went down and smoke was bellowing out of the exhaust. Is this something that I can do myself or is it very complicated. I just don't want to screw something else up. The only thing that I do know is that I have been using a 50:1 ratio of gas and oil in the fuel tank.

Pull your motor cowl, and the airbox cover. Follow the oil line into the motor and you will find the Variable Ratio Oiling system (VRO)/fuel pump or the Oil Metering System (OMS). the smaller line that connects to the bottom of the pump is the Oil feed line. This should be plugged with a yellow plastic plug and clamped off. The intake port on the pump should have a cap on it. If it doesn't you are still pumping oil out of the tank.
