250 VMAX HPDI

I plan to order a new boat shortly and was wondering how many guys were running this engine and how reliable has it been? Have you had any major problems? Has Yamaha taken care of the ones that have had problems? And can anyone tell me why the compression is different (compared to the 225 and 300 HPDI)

Pretty sure I will have some more questions, but that was all I could think of at the moment.

Thanks

Re: 250 VMAX HPDI (Groman)

I'm back to Yamaha. . . I could run any engine I want. I've had problems with other brands but no brand is perfection. I also believe the lower unit on the HPDI provides the best lift and speed, especially on heavier boats like Champions and Rangers.

Plus. . . I think they look "cool". . .

Miker I am looking at a Bay Boat. I know it isn't a high performance hull, but it will fit my needs better than a bass boat right now.

I am looking at either the ZX22 or BayCat.....Both have 20" transoms. I don't think Yamaha 4 strokes offer a 20" shaft in that HP range.

Re: 250 VMAX HPDI (blazerman)

I have a 2003 HPDI 250. It blew a cylinder back in December. Yamaha installed a new 2007 powerhead under warranty, no questions asked. They also paid the dealer for a little bit if rewiring I wanted in the battery compartment.

In addition, it seemed to rev a bit higher than we wanted with my existing prop. The Yamaha rep came back twice to test 2 different props, and then gave me a brand new T prop, for free.

The service I received was outstanding. My last 5 motors have been Yamahas and I'm sticking with them.

I like mine. I dont however like the lower units. I had my lower unit blueprinted by Allison guru Lee Sanderson/Robbie at Propeller Dynamics and picked up neary 4 mph.

I have had mine a little over a year and really like it. Working through my first warranty issue with my dealer and Yamaha now so I can not answer that part of your question.

Re: 250 VMAX HPDI (Thomasr)

Lets see, 2 Yamaha 250 HPDI's I have had in less than 2 years, 3 blown power-heads in 14 months, loss of water pressure at WOT, loss of RPM's when ECM was exchange, problems starting the engine first thing in the morning, and what else did I have problems with, O' yes Yamaha inform the dealer and myself that they would not warranty any work on the starting or RPM problem on the rig and the motor was still under warranty!!! Even had a law suit against Yamaha, but I sold the rig and dropped the suit. Good Luck, hope no one has the kind of problems that I had with any manufacture. Glenn

Re: 250 VMAX HPDI (Glenn)

hey glenn,
you have had the same problem as one guy in my club, 3 blown powerheads in a short time and Yamaha did not want to cover anything, my advice to the buyer is go with Mercury or E-tec, more guys I know are ordering E-tec's for there 3 yr no maintence and 7 yr warranty. Cant beat that. I have yam 200 and dont know whether to try to trade in for E-tec or sweat out

Re: 250 VMAX HPDI (RiverTidalFishing)

Don't want to start a war but the ETEC of late have been having their share of blown powerheads and other issues....one large dealer that I know of has their prostaff running Yamahas exclusively. In the past their prostaff was free to run Merc, Yamaha, or Evinrude.

Unfortunately all of these manufacturers have failures, what makes the difference in my opinion is your local dealer and if they can get you back on the lake.

BTW - I love my 250 HPDI - 35 hours now and not one issue.

Peace,
Don<><

My first cousin is the GM at the dealership I would be purchasing from and we are pretty close (I am his youngest son's godfather), so I would hope that he would work with me if something did come up, but with family who knows.

Thanks for the information guys
