    Synthetic oil for lower units

Is it OK to change out your lower unit oil with a synthetic oil? If so, is it best to completely drain the old oil before pumping in a synthetic? Also, which brand is the best to use?

I use amsoil. I let all the old drain out. Pumped about 1/4 qt. amsoil in and let it all drain. then filled with amsoil.

Ive used Amsoil in all of my outboards/lower units. Your local NAPA store might carry it.

Re: Synthetic oil for lower units (MR 188 Elite)

I'm picking up my new to me boat. It has a 90 hp Yamaha on it. I'm going to change the lower unit gear lube, as the engine has sat longer than a year. Yamaha recommends a 90 weight gear oil. All I can find is multi-viscosity gear oil 75w90 or 85w140.

Would Amsoil 75w90 or Valvoline 75w90 gear oil be OK to use?
