    Tirm gauge not working

I have a 1986 90HP Yamaha. My problem is that when I put the motor on my boat and hooked everything up the trim gauge is showing that the motor is trimmed all the way up. I thin kthe trim switch on the motor might be bad but I cant find it. Can anyone tell me where the switch might be on my motor.

Have you tried using the link at the top of the page to find it?

    Select "outboard" for #1.
    Select "1986" for #2.
    Select "90EPLJ" for #3.

Scroll down the left side of the page to "tilt and trim". Now look at part #7. That's your sending unit. It should be mounted up under the engine and mounted to the brackets that hold the engine to the boat.

Is it really a '86 motor? Either way the trim senders are the same. Tilt the motor all the way up and look under the powerhead at the tilt hinge pin left side. You should see something like the picture below. The thing circled is the tilt sending unit. Its got a plastic arm on it that rides up and down with the movement of the tilt. They are notorious for jamming with dirt or mineral buildups and need to be clean every once in a while. Take some WD40 and spray it into the sender and work the plastic arm up and down to free it up. If the arm is broken off you'll have to replace the unit (about $85) if you want the trim indication to work. This is all routine maintenance stuff.

I found the sending unit and it is fine so I am going tohave to get the gauge checked. I may just have a broken wire in the harness. thanks for the help.
And yeah it is an 86 model motor and runs really well for its age. It was not as new as i wanted but you cant beat FREE.

The arm on the switch is stioo in tact. Is is possible that something internal on the switch might have gone out. I wouldnt think it is the gauge because when you hook power to it it will go to full trim and back down when you take the power off.
