I would top off the fluid before testing it anymore. If it is borderline low then it may be sucking a little air. It takes letting it sit a few hours to let the air bubbles clear out. Also I would think it will always raise slower than it lowers because of gravity and the weight. If it continues giving you trouble and gets worse then I would check for a fluid leak to the motor or worn brushes. Also I am sure you already know if you hear a change in pitch of the motor it is probably getting air. Good luck, sounds like you already know what a pain they can be.

I believe you check and fill it with the motor up. Guess that would mean raising it by hand. Let me check the manual and see just what it says to be sure. what year and motor do you have?

Here is what it says. Use power system or open manual relief valve and position engine in full up. Engage tilt lock lever and close relief valve. Slowly remove plug, (if you hear air escaping stop and let it bleed out). Then fill the unit to the bottom of the opening and install the plug and raise the tilt lock. Cycle up and down several times and recheck level. That is what the manual says, I would also add to drop the trailer tongue to the ground, that lets the engine come all the way down and gives a little extra room for fluid.

what did you to get the trim to start working again, did you break it down and repair something??? Did it just stop working out of the blue?

    Re: trim (rangersndanger)

I was at a tournament and the trim just started bleeding down on its own long ride after a day of fishing with motor all the way down got it back home and started taking trim apart and found one big o-ring in the bottom of the hyd piston was ripped in half so replaced all the o-rings and new res cap cap kept leaking finally stopped after bleeding the fluid might still be a little low but it is moving up and down and not going down by itself do you have some helpfull info thanks

    Re: trim (mhowdy)

well, if you replaced all the o-rings and the white teflon spacers, check to make sure that new cap has the o-ring in it and that it is seated properly. It is real easy to overtighten that cap and press the o-ring out of place, it should only be hand tightened.

if you've done all of that, I would just keep bleeding it by the manual sequence

it is important that you let it sit in the up position on the lock for awhile before ever removing the cap to check the fluid level

    Re: trim (rangersndanger)

thanks for the help I think that I have done the steps correctly but it still makes a little noise I might take to dealer to let them finish it up at least it now goes up and down

    Re: trim (mhowdy)

is it a popping noise, or can you hear the air bubbling around in there

if it is popping, you may have just lost the grease on the top of your pistons when you took it apart, grease where the two smaller trim rams touch the motor, and where any other moving parts touch metal to metal

marine grade grease, should in sporting goods section at wal-mart.

yeah that sounds right about the one bolt, but it shouldn't be loose in any way

    Re: trim (rangersndanger)

It seems like the whole trim unit moves front to back either by hand or a little slap when using trim front to back is towards the boat and back towards the motor

    Re: trim (mhowdy)

that doesn't sound normal, try to get in touch with "hamfisted", maybe that is normal for your motor, mine doesn't do that
