Having more tach problems with 04' Evinrude 150 HO

I changed my tach setting to the #6 setting instead of the #5 setting that it was on. Now the tach does not work at all. Is there a reason the tach on the #6 setting does not work? I moved it back to the #5 just so it would work. If I leave it on #5 how many rpm's am I off at wot. Just so I know the difference, If I'm on the #5 setting and I show 5500rpm's am I really at 5700rpms or 5300rpm. This is very important to me as I am having some prop work done and I don't want to turn over 5700.
    thanks in advance,

I'm bumping this back up to the top so maybe someone that knows will chime in.

My question is who told you to change it to the number 6 location? Almost all factory tachs are off a little bit. My '05 200 Pro was off between 100 and 200 rpms when Rusty hooked it up to the laptop.

I think it was Seahorse, but not sure. When I changed to setting 6, the tach went dead, so I went back to setting 5. I just thought maybe my tach was different and did not need to be on setting 6. I'm ok with it being off a little I would just like to know which way it is off.
I guess I could get my dealer to check for me. Thanks for the bump.

No problem. I would definitely get your dealer to check it. Shouldn't take but a minute with the laptop.

You didn't say what brand or model of tach, but the switch in the back may have to be moved slightly to make contact. If that doesn't do it, you probably have a bad tach.

Bombardier tachs have a 1 year parts and labor warranty. Some off-brand gauges such as Faria have a several year warranty, but no labor, and you have to send it back to them with a small handling fee.

I will have to check to see what kind of tach it is. I have an 04' Stratos 285proxl
and this is the tach it came with. Really, if I just knew how much my tach was off at wot I would just leave it alone. Chapionman said that on setting 5 it would be about 200 rpm's off but I don't know which way. If mine says 5500 is it really 5300 or 5700. thanks,

    Skip,

At 5500, what speed are you running (per GPS) and what pitch prop are you running? Using a prop slip/speed calculator, you should be able to determine pretty close to what rpms you are really turning.

You should have Stratos guages in that 285. I don't think they put Faria's in them.

Well, I just got some prop work done by Mark and I have only been able to run it once. Here are the numbers from that run.
10mph wind and light chop on the water, 2 people, all of my gear, 1/2 tank of gas:

The two runs with wind at my back:
    first was 66.2gps, and 66.7gps

The two run going against wind were:
    64.3gps and 64.9gps

Tach showed a hair over 5500rpms. I am very impressed with what Mark did with my prop. I think those are pretty good numbers for an 18 footer.
