It's too reliable... Great motor. Keep it fed with ringfree or seafom and run it hard to 5800-6000.

Is it cold natured and hard to start? I had one on my first triton and I hated to have to pump the bulb when I lauched and it was smokey and hard to start. I may be over analyzing this. I am looking at a Ranger 188vs with the yam 150 vmax. What do yo guys think?

mine can be cold natured when its cold out. if you pump the bulb before you put in the water while the powerhead is tilted sitting level with the boat and let it sit a few minutes then choke the motor for about 10 sec before turning it over it seems to crank good. sometimes i may have to tap the hotfoot a few times if its been a while since it was cranked

The key to any carb motor is to push and hold the key in while cranking... And after it fires, Keep holding it in until it starts to choke out. Then let off.. You may have to bump the key in a time or two after that.... They are not cold natured if you know how to start them. Many people struggle with this... It's really nothing to be concerned with.

    Re: Yamaha 150 vmax... (Miscanthus)

I have a 2005 185vs, bought new with VMax 150 carb. First boat but I am thrilled I made the decision to save $4K over the 175 HPDI. Took it out last weekend after sitting since end of October and it cranked fine. The key to starting mine is to push the key in (choking it) while turning it over and it fires right up. It will start to die a couple of times and I just push the key in for a second maybe 2 or 3 times and it's warm. My thinking on mileage is that every outboard gets horrible mileage and it's just tiny, tiny differences in how horrible it is. Plus figure out how long it will take to make up the price difference in gas savings.
