I got to wondering about the cost of oil as a component of the total fuel cost.
Let's say that you use 50 gallons of gas for every 1 gallon of oil. That would be a 50:1 fuel/oil mix ratio, which is a fairly normal mix ratio for outboards. I understand that some of the new HPDI's and other motors that use computers may have a ratio more like 100:1, but I'll stick with the 50:1 ratio for now. So for every 50 gallons of gas, you use 1 gallon of oil.
Now if a gallon of gas costs $2.90 then 50 gallons is $145.00. Then there is the cost of the oil - say $20. That makes the total cost $165.00. So the cost per gallon of the 51 gallons of gas/oil is $3.24.
If I were to use oil that costs $12/gallon, then the total cost would be $157.00. And the cost/gallon of gas/oil is $3.08. So the $8 savings on oil amounts to 16 cents/gallon.
It's just my choice, but when gas is as high as it is (and the price can change by 10-15 cents overnight), I don't really mind putting $20/gallon oil into my $12,000 Yamahammer. To me, the 16 cents (or 8 dollars) is worth my peace of mind.
Now don't get me wrong - a couple bucks saved gets me a tall, cold brewski and I'm all for that. And I don't begrudge anyone else however they get theirs. I think I would just rather save it somewhere else.
