My brother in laws 2002 250 ox66 smokes real bad after it is warmed up and only after you stop to fish for 15 minutes or more. After you re-start it the smoke is terrible and stalls unless you clear it out. Anyone else have this problem?

How do the sparkplugs look? Are the bottom cylinder plugs very dark or sooty while the higher ones are fairly normal? There had been some problems with the shaft seal on some of the oil pumps leaking oil directly into the crankcase, and it normally shows up as fouled lower plugs or soot on those plugs. Other than that just check that the linkage arm is properly adjusted. Should rest on the stop pin with the throttle at idle.

He put new plugs in last sept and took the boat out. No smoke when its cold but after it got hot and he restarted the motor it smoked real bad until you clear it out. He said all the plugs looked normal. Its at a dealer and they cant find anything wrong but acknowledge there is a problem.
Tell him next time he is out to trim the mtr up when he stops and leave it up untill hes wants to move. Now dont ask me what this does but my 250 smokes if I dont trim it up and it doesnt if I do. Would someone explain this to me also.
Chris's VX motor has one check valve between the oil pump and the reed cage lines that might be leaking. Or the seal on the oil pump shaft.
Item number 8 is the check valve in the VX motor...
Mark, your HPDI has individual check valves in each line to the reed cage. Any one of them could be leaking oil into the reed cage when the motor is shutoff.
You also have the auxiliary electric oil pump, controlled by the computer.
If you have it sitting in the driveway with the hood off and airbox off (engine in lowered position...), you might be able to see the oil if you open the throttle plates (without the motor running...). Look into the reed cage with a flashlight and see if you can see a stream of oil from one or more of the oil inlet orifices. Just replace that line's check valve.
HPDI's have check valves in each line... Items 16 & 41...
If you don't see traces of oil running down the interior of the reed cage walls then I would suspect the O-ring seal on the oil pump.

I will do that. I wanted to change the reeds and heads down the road. This will give me a idea of the job. Thanks Mike
my ox66 225 vmax did this took for ever to find the problem. had a pin hole in to fuel pump diaphram. all of the yamaha test for fuel pressure, vacuum etc did not show this. I had the factory rep out with me for 6 hours before he found the problem. we finally ran it for about 20 minutes real hard and shut it off for about 20 minutes. he unbolted all 3 fuel pumps from the block but left the hoses hooked up. took the primer bulb and kept squeezing it and finally saw a trace of fuel come out the back side of the pump where it bolts to the block. took the pump apart and held the diaphram up to the light and stretch it and you could see a pin hole. replaced the pump and no problems since. this may be your problem.
My 2003 vx250 smokes heavily on startup every time. Plugs are fine. Had oil pump replaced last fall after fouling 2 sets of plugs, but mechanic says everything is now ok. Is this a safety measure to provide extra lubrication at startup? Runs fine after the smoke clears.
It's a 2 stroke... Be glad it smokes.....Try Amsoil HPInjector oil.

A service rep came to the shop he took it to and he put a new 02 sensor in and adjusted the oil pump rod. Tech support had them clean the 02 sensor first but he did not like the readings so he put a new one in. Yamaha filled his gas tanks put in new plugs and also extended his warranty for 6 months. He also had my brother-in-law test ride the boat with him to be sure he was happy with the fix. We will be taking his boat to Canada next week, so we will know for sure if it's fixed. Thats customer service.![]()
