Changed out water pump now won't go into forward gear!

I have a 2001 Mercury 200 EFI. Changed out water pump now I can't put it into forward but will go to reverse. If I spin the prop I can get it to go both in forward and reverse and everything seems fine but the problem continues once I keep trying to put it in and out of gear. Any thoughts?

About has to be that the control box and gear housing were not both together on gear position when you installed ghsg. Assuming all was fine prior

Thanks Sherm for the feedback. Everything was fine before the water pump change. I restated the lower unit today and still have the same problem. I 98% sure its joined together correctly. Guess I'm going to have to take it in to get it looked at.

    Stephen:

You might want to drop the gearcase back down:

-Ensure GEAR SHIFT is in NEUTRAL
-Ensure GEARCASE is in NEUTRAL (prop spins freely in BOTH DIRECTIONS).
-Remove plug wires, turn lanyard switch OFF.
-Reinstall gearcase... have someone turn flywheel for you to align splines on driveshaft.

If is possible to mis-index the position when using the "forward" gear position. Neutral is a much "narrower" window (and a bit less likely to have mis-alignment).

Re: Changed out water pump now won't go into forward gear! (EuropeanAM)

    Don
While were on the subject. I changed my WP on my Optimax 150 this weekend. Everything went fairly smooth and even though I haven't had a chance to put it in the water.......I ran in the driveway and went into forward and reverse fine.
My issue was the speedometer pitot tube. I had Sherms list but could not find the connection to disconnect the tube. I tried to unhook at the connection on the lower end but didn't have the tool or the strength to loosen. I ended up cutting the tube hoping i could piece later. Any suggestions? should i redo the entire tube?
    thanks

Serial number would be helpful.... need to determine WHICH style pitot tubing you have.

You do have the engine running when trying to put in forward gear, correct?

+1... or at least have someone spin the prop for you. DON'T shift when the engine is not running (or prop turning).

Also, when installing the gearcase, you MUST MANUALLY align the upper shift shaft with the lower shift shaft, ensuring they index with each other.

Many models have the shift shaft exposed about 1.5 inches above the gearcase (giving you a place to grasp the shift shaft and assist you with obtaining proper indexing/alignment).

No I did not. Does that make a difference? I don't want to head out to the lake till I'm sure I don't have a problem.

Re: Changed out water pump now won't go into forward gear! (TexCaboCat)

You can check gear engagement as follows:

-KEY OFF.... LANYARD OFF (preferably all plug wires disconnected). Think SAFETY.

-Have an assistant operate the gearshift while you spin the prop.

NEUTRAL: Prop spins freely in BOTH directions.
FORWARD: Prop LOCKS when spun COUNTERCLOCKWISE
REVERSE: Prop LOCKS when spin CLOCKWISE.

If your results match.... plug everything back in and launch it.
