    Re: popit valve (dirtracer81)

You should have 2-4 psi water pressure at idle (minimum).

It is indeed possible that the poppet valve is sticking or leaking.... also possible is a thermostat problem (on this engine, there should be very little or NO telltale stream until the engine has warmed up to operating temp - or approximately 143 degrees).

Telltale stream is supplied from the THERMOSTATS.

When chasing down water pressure and cooling system problems, ALWAYS, ALWAYS start at the SOURCE: The Water Pump. ONLY after complete pump replacement is it appropriate to continue to other potential causes (thermostats, poppet valve, gaskets, etc).

Its got a new water pump new thermostate the popit is the only thing left to change the motor is just coming off breakin. U can tell when the thermostate opens up I don't have any pressure on the hose and wot its running 12 or 14 psi

Poppet valve would be the next, logical item to check/replace.

Be sure to verify the SEAT is firmly retained in the block (and not loose/sliding in and out).

    Re: popit valve (dirtracer81)

I had an issue with water pouring out of the exhaust port last season on my 1990 Mercury 175. I replaced the complete water pump assemble, thermostats and poppet valve to no avail. My water pressure was weak, reading out a couple of psi below the recommended range. My solution was to finally pull the powerhead and check the gaskets between it and the midsection. In my case the gasket below the exhaust plate had deteriorated allowing water on its way up to the engine to exit out of the exhaust port prematurely.

This does (and can) happen. In some cases, you MAY be able to look up through the exhaust tuner (with gearcase removed) and see the gasket "hooched" out into the exhaust cavity (but NOT in every case).

Also- ANY of the water pump gaskets that have cracked, split, or torn can cause a lowered water pressure (ESPECIALLY the gasket BELOW the impeller plate, or below the water pump base).

Water exits through the prop ALL the time... that part is perfectly normal.

Hello I cheaked the lower unit it had water in the oil so the seal is bad will this cause low water pressure I had this seal replaced last fall and the tech said he had a hard time putting it in and when I tried to start the motor at the lake after getting it back it seemed like it was dragin and would hardly turn over then it like broke free and started could the seal be in a bind thanks

    Re: popit valve (dirtracer81)

Seals usually do NOT affect water pressure, UNLESS they are allowing gear lube to leak into the water pump.

Seals also seldom cause "binding". Much more likely is that the leaking seal allow water in, which caused DAMAGE to one or more bearings, gears, etc.

Strongly suggest obtaining the "Hands-On Assistance" of a Certified or Master Technician.
