    Lower unit on 200 EFI

Well I finally did something that everybody is gonna do at some point. I hit something in my boat with my motor, 1998 Mercury 200 EFI, and damaged my prop. After I took my prop off I noticed that I also bent the prop shaft just a very slight bit. The is no noise, no lube leaking, no water or metal in the lube, nothing. I know it would be cheaper to just replace the lower unit than the shaft, or so I have been told.

I have a low water pickup lower unit that has been rebuilt or rather remanufactured, that is off a 99 or 2000 Mercury 225 EFI 3.0 liter. I know it won't fit on my motor but I got it a such a deal I couldn't turn it down. Would it be possible to make it this lower unit work on my motor or would it just be better to find someone that will either trade me or swap it for another that will fit mine. Any ideas? I really wanted a low water pickup for this boat, just because all the grass and what not around here.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated... thanks!!

    Be well,
    Greg

    Greg:

If you can visibly see any warp/wobble in the propshaft (focus on the dimple at the end of the propshaft while turning prop)- the shaft is indeed bent, and OUTSIDE of the allowable propshaft runout tolerance.

Replacing the propshaft itself is often the most cost-effective means of repair (should be FAR cheaper than a replacement gearcase).

There is not any way to properly adapt a 3L gearcase to a 2.5L model midsection. Stick with the APPROPRIATE, OEM Mercury gearcase and components (accept NO substitutes).

    Don

I appreciate it. I have someone that is going to look into it and see what is the best option for repair. I agree, I didn't think the 3.0 would fit but it was worth a shot. I may be able to work it into the deal on my motor . Just have to see. As always I am MOST APPRECIATIVE of your info and direction.

    Thanks and Be Well!
