Mercury trim pump, Detwiler Jack Plate

My Detwiler Jackplate has the same trim pump as some of the single ram Mercury trim systems. After changing the seals, refilling it, and bleeding the air out, I was running the cylinder down and I heard it bind. I should have stopped it, but this is what happened. This is a picture of the reservior under the trim motor with a crack where it blew out.

Would having too much fluid in the system cause this, or did I put something together wrong? Is it possible to put the check valve with the spring behind it in wrong? What would cause pressure to build up in the reservoir when lowerin the ram?

This happened before I fully assembled the plat, so the weight of the motor was not on it.

    Thanks

Improper assembly OR overfilled fluid level could potentially cause this.

Fluid should be filled with the cylinder FULLY EXTENDED, and filled "just to" the bottom of the fill plug threads.

You would then need to cycle the plate down/up, and recheck fluid level several times.

I filled it while it was laying flat on the table. I'm hoping that was it.

I'm going to find someone that will tig the reservior. It didn't crack on a gasket surface, and it doesn't look like Mercury sells just the reservior. The motor comes with it, and its more than I want to spend.

    Thanks for the help

Raise your hand if you can weld like this.

I'd give my left big toe to be able to tig aluminum like this. Thin cast isn't easy.

Looks pretty good.... it does help when the casting material is "cleaner material".
