Does the LU need to be removed to replace the seals? A friends LU is leaking oil and when he removed the prop there was some line wrapped around the shaft. He called a few local shops that quoted him $250+ in labor, $350-400 total and are claiming that he needs to have his impeller replaced since the LU has to be removed to do the seals. He just had a complete water pump assemble installed less then 6months ago.
Although the propshaft seals CAN be replaced without lower unit removal, PROPER repair techniques require that the case be PRESSURE TESTED before and after repair.
To properly pressure test- the water pump would be removed.
Common sense repair techniques dictate that an impeller that's been removed BE REPLACED. You're right there... it's OUT, and installing a used/worn impeller makes very little sense.
