lower unit oil leaking,07 opti.150

I just had my lower unit oil changed last tuesday.now its leaking a little out of the top hole. the plug is tight.I was watching the mechanic change it after he took out bottom plug and drained it.replaced plug and started pumping oil in top hole,he pumped for about 15 min and said for some reason it dont want to fill, maybe the oil is just cold,he was still pumping.then it spewed out fill hole ,he said thats it. could it just be overfillid.is that bad for it? should I just watch it to c if it stops leaking or take it bak to shop. my local cabelas.

He filled it from the top hole? Lower unit is filled from the bottom to displace air in the gear case. If he filled it from the top, you likely have air in the gearcase trying to work it's way to the top. If oil can get out, water can get in. To be safe I'd replace the small gaskets on both the drain plug and the vent plug. While you have the plugs out you can check to see if you have the proper level of oil in your gear case. Fill from the bottom just until oil comes out the vent (top) hole. Easy procedure, should be described step by step in your owner's manual.

I'm going to add several items:

    -Drain gearcase COMPLETELY.

-Replace drain plug and vent screw seals.

-PRESSURE TEST GEARCASE to confirm no leaks (it's likely that seals were damaged by the "botched" filling attempt).

-Once certain no leaks are present, refill PROPERLY (from bottom drain opening... until fluid level just reaches the bottom of threads in upper vent screw).

-Find a mechanic/technician that understands basic servicing techniques.

The top is the vent to expell air when filling from bottom. Doesn't sound like much of a mechanic to me.

    Re: (Les Young)

Find a new mechanic. I hate to be blunt be your mechanic is an idiot. Draining and replacing gear lube is about as basic as it gets. Hell my wife can even do it.

Hope you get it all fixed up. I would hold them liable if it is still leaking.
