    Frog fishing

I had a tournament over the weekend and I started off with a Ribbit frog. I had 7 total hits without a single hook up. They would not hold on to the bait. I only set the hook 2 times but they had let go already. I was fishing in very thick grass but still. No hook ups with 7 hits. Has anyone had an exerience like this and then changed to a hollow body frog? I got to thinking last night, I wonder if I would have changed to a hollow body frog what would have happened. Something I could stop and slow down more. Any thoughts?

Sometimes that happens. I think the bass try to kill the bait instead of eating it. I had the same thing Sunday. They wouldn't touch a hollow body but would hit the ribbit.

I have had the same type of luck on both types of frogs at one time or another. Fishing in grass they sometimes do miss it but sometimes I sometimes wonder if the color i am using is off on the belly and they are having trouble picking it up under the light conditions.

No gar. I did have a couple snap at it but the 7 missed hits I counted were all bass.

What kind of hook are you using and are you burying the hook in the plastic or are you skin hooking it on top of the frog?

The double hook that Ribbit makes. Just skin hooking it. The problem was the fish weren't getting it into their mouth. I've never had a problem getting the hook into the fish when they hold on to it.

same with me, good blowups but no hookups so I gave up on it last year.

I use Ribbits all the time. What is your set up? I use a 7', 6 Med-Heavy action with a Shimano Curado bait caster and have a good hook-up ratio.

It seems to vary for me ..Some days they just crush it and I have high hook ups but other days not so good. Guess it depends on the mood of the fish

it's those kinds of days that they don't want to eat it. You can try a scum frog (sitting still) or try punching with plastics. If they are blowing up on it, they just showed you where they were. Soak something in and around where they blew up... I'd have gone to flippin' after about the third blow-up-without-a-hook-up.

After the first couple of misses I normally turn to a Senko to follow up the strike and I normally find out I am chasing bowfin. But sometimes they just will not eat it.

Sometimes the bass just aren't hitting it. I think there is a very narrow window when the bass will truly commit to the frog. The rest of the time they are just hitting. This is why a lot of people don't like one frog over another because of perceived hook-ups. Throw something else or put a 3/16 ounce weight on it and stroke it like a jig.

Just last week on Guntersville, I experienced two missed fish on blow ups on the horny toad. The third I let the fish take line as i lowered the rod to the count of 3 then busted him, Nice largemouth @ 5+ lbs, after that it was on with the 3 count, til the clouds moved out, then a Zoom swimming super fluke brought 'em to the boat.....20+ fish...best 5 19 lbs....a good day for me.

KVD was just talking about this on a fishing program. Says, he sometimes gets so excited at a blow-up that he immediately sets the hook. Said to wait a sec or 2 until fish takes the frog, than set the hook.

When that happens you can almost always catch them if you throw a senko back where the blow up was.

Live by the frog, you die by the frog...LOL...it was my downfall Saturday in a Weekend Series event. Lost enough solid fish to cost myself a Top 3 finish. Just could not put it down....LOL

It's the way it is! Sometimes they jump over it of just slap it with their body. Other times they bite it and thats when we have fun.
In reality: it's always been that way with any top water bait.
