i changed the impeller on my 115 optimax, i put everything back together, and i can only spin the prop to the right. it doesn't matter if i have it in forward, neutral, or reverse, it will only spin to the right, what did i do wrong?

Do you hear it shifting gears when you engage it? Because it sounds like you might have not gotten the shifter rod connected with the coupling.

when i take the lower unit off, i can't get the shift shaft to go into neutral. i can only get the prop to turn to the right, and it makes a clicking noise.
Try turning the DRIVESHAFT with one hand while you try to shift the shifter to neutral. And make sure you turn the driveshaft clockwise (looking down from above the driveshaft).

It's likely going to be easiest for you to place the CONTROL in NEUTRAL.
REMOVE SPARK PLUG WIRES... AND TURN LANYARD TO "OFF" POSITION.
Remove gearcase.
Rotate the splined shift shaft, COUNTERCLOCKWISE until you feel a "click" (you will feel some spring tension here).
Confirm that you're in NEUTRAL by spinning the prop (it should turn freely in BOTH directions).
Reinstall the gearcase. You may need someone to rotate the flywheel CLOCKWISE to assist in aligning the driveshaft splines.
Confirm shifting as follows:
Neutral: Free spinning prop in both directions.
Forward: Propeller locks when spun COUNTERCLOCKWISE
Reverse: Propeller locks when spun CLOCKWISE
Don't forget to reinstall plug wires and turn lanyard back on.![]()

this is what i can't do, no matter which way i turn the shift shaft, i can't get it to go into neutral......should i be able to turn it into neutral by hand or should i be putting a pair of vice grips on it?
i took the lower unit to my local dealer and the guy put his special tool on the shift shaft and had the thing in neutral in about 4 seconds!! brought it home and it went right in! thanks for all your help!

That's the RIGHT way to do it. Good decision!
Glad to hear you got it straightened out.![]()
