    Question For Motor Builders - BlackMax Cylinder Hone Or Bore - Pics

    I have an '86 150 HP XR-2 with a dead cylinder. I pulled the head and the cylinder wall has some damage. What I would like to know from looking at these pics if this looks like material from the piston ON the cylinder wall that could possibly be honed out OR if this looks like gouging resulting in a bore.
    I know looking at pics isn't the best way but I'm just throwing this out there to see what feedback I get. Thanks.

    Very difficult to tell from pictures.... but from what I "see".... it looks like you have more than simple "aluminum transfer".

    Have you confirmed if this engine has been steel-sleeved (via a magnet right at the cylinder head deck surface)?

    I confirmed with a magnet today that they are steel sleeved. I took some more pics (magnet in pic). After scratching the problem area with my fingernail and looking at it real close it does seem to be aluminum transfer, as it is "raised".

    I'm also trying to find out the brand of this piston, from what I can make out on top of the piston;

    3207, HE29
    S -Starboard (with 3 letters above it, maybe JFK)

    This piston is different from all the rest and the guy I bought it from told me it had been rebuilt before (not sure if partial or full).

    You might try contacting Wiseco Pistons at: 1-800-321-1364

    Although this is an old part number, seems like I recall seeing it some years ago....

    There are several products that will remove aluminum transfer from the cylinder wall... however, as it's highly likely that SOME level of machining will be required here, it's probably wise to have this done (or at least inspected) by a local machine shop (one that's well versed in outboard engine machine work).
