Reply Grounding Strap on Lower Unit by Motor Mount 92-200 EFI
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What a great site! This is my first post.
The grounding strap on my lower unit that attaches behind the securing bracket for the port-side lower motor mount fries out every couple of years and leaves my trim guage inoperable. This is for a 92 Merc 200 EFI. Is there a trick to mounting this strap to prevent this from recurring? Does anyone have an idea as to why this occurs? I can't rally tell if it is caused by a short or vibration but I suspect vibration acts like a saw to cut through the cable. It seems like a funky design to me just to supply a ground to the trim guage sending unit.

Have a 96 200 EFI and no problems with the strap. I see you are on the Potomac. Is the failure related to use in brackish water? If it is caused by an electrical load, you have a very unusual and serious problem. The strap is just a ground strap it is not used for the trim sender but to ensure all part of the engine have a common ground to prevent electrolysis.
